Spain Beat Paraguay,Advance To World Cup Semis

Sunday, July 4, 2010
World Cup
/EFE) A late goal by star striker David Villa gave Spain a 1-0 victory over Paraguay here and helped it secure a spot in the final four of the World Cup for the first time in 60 years.

Saturday's victory was a special one for La Roja and its die-hard fans, as Paraguay had several opportunities to take the lead before Villa, now the top scorer in South Africa with five goals, found himself in the right place at the right time in the 81st minute.

The match at Ellis Park was just a minute old when Paraguayan midfielder Jonathan Santana launched the first shot on goal, a low strike that star keeper Iker Casillas was able to smother.

The South American squad came closer to scoring in the first half than its more highly regarded European opponent, whose most promising chances consisted of solitary forays by Villa and a shot from midfielder Xavi Hernandez that sailed over the crossbar.

Vicente del Bosque's side had a clear advantage in time of possession through the first 40 minutes, but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.

Then in the span of six minutes at the end of the first half, Paraguay had two excellent chances to take the lead.

The first came in the 40th minute when Nelson Valdez received a long pass and beat Casillas, although Paraguay's elation was quickly replaced by disappointment when forward Oscar Cardozo - who had also moved toward the approaching ball, though without touching it - was ruled offside and the goal was disallowed.

Then just before halftime, Valdez, marked by Carles Puyol, made a charge down the left side and fired a strong shot that sailed over the crossbar.

Although Spain's play improved a bit after the break, that didn't stop Del Bosque from bringing in Cesc Fabregas as a substitute for the struggling Fernando Torres in the 56th minute - a move that preceded the wildest stretch of Saturday night's quarterfinal.

First Spanish defenseman Gerard Pique received a yellow card for taking down Cardozo in the box, setting up a penalty kick - also by Cardozo - that Casillas dove to his left to save.

Then two minutes later, in the 59th minute, Spain's Villa was taken down by defenseman Antolin Alcaraz in the Paraguayan area, setting up a penalty to be taken by Xabi Alonso.

The Spanish midfielder scored but referee Carlos Batres ruled that Spain was encroaching and ordered the kick be retaken.

On the second try, goalie Justo Villar guessed right and blocked Alonso's shot, but the ball remained alive and the Spanish players wanted another penalty on what appeared to be a takedown of Fabregas by the keeper.

But no foul was called and the score remained 0-0 after one of the most nerve-racking stretches of this year's World Cup.

Spain has suffered many World Cup disappointments in the 60 years since finishing fourth at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, and Saturday's match would have ranked as one of the Iberian nation's most heart-breaking losses if defeat had been in the cards.

Thanks to Villa, it wasn't.

In the 81st minute, Andres Iniesta beat a pair of Paraguayan defenders before passing to Pedro Rodriguez, who had come on as a substitute just minutes earlier.

Rodriguez's shot hit the goalpost but ricocheted back to Villa, who fired a delicate strike that hit the other goalpost and bounced along the goal line before entering the goal on the other side.

Spain seemed to have the match in hand with a 1-0 lead and just nine minutes to go, but more heroics were needed from Casillas, who saved one attempt from Lucas Barrios and then a follow-up shot from Roque Santa Cruz in the 88th minute to keep Paraguay scoreless and send Spain into the semifinals.

Next up for La Roja Wednesday will be Germany, which humiliated Argentina 4-0 in Saturday's other semifinal in Cape Town.

Viva Villa — Spain counts on ‘blessed’ striker

David Villa gave Barcelona even more reason to be pleased they bought the striker before the World Cup.

His late winner against Paraguay, which put Spain into the semifinals for the first time was his fifth in five games at the tournament to make him leading scorer at the tournament.

“It speaks volumes for his form. He was right there,” Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque said.

“He is blessed,” said keeper and captain Iker Casillas.

Villa’s scoring form is in marked contrast to partner Fernando Torres, who has so far failed to find the net in South Africa and was replaced by Cesc Fabregas in the 56th minute.

Fortunately, Spain had Villa to maintain his strike rate to eventually break down a stubborn Paraguay side.

The 28-year-old, who also won the Golden Boot at Euro 2008 as Spain cast aside years of underachievement to triumph, has now netted a total of 43 goals in 63 appearances, just one shy of Raul’s record of 44 goals in 102 games.

“Villa is addicted to goals, he only thinks about that. There is no better striker than Villa, this is proved not only by his goals record but also by his general contribution to the play of the team,” Del Bosque wrote in a column ahead of the Paraguay tie.

Barcelona paid Valencia 40 million euros (49 million dollars) for Villa but earlier this week Joan Laporta, the outgoing president of the Catalan giants, justified the high price tag for the striker.

“If I had waited until the World Cup to sign him then his price would have gone up by 20 million euros. That is why I was so keen to sign him in May, before the World Cup started,” he said.

Villa had earlier been brought down in the box by Antolin Alcarez, but Xabi Alonso failed to convert from the spot in a twice-taken penalty.

His winner came after Andres Iniesta played the ball to substitute Pedro whose shot beat Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar, but came back off the post.

Villa was on hand to hit the rebound home with a shot, which went in after coming back from the inside of both posts.

“Villa had that hunger for goal that allowed him to convert,” said Del Bosque.

Gargan gives FC Toronto draw with Dynamo

Thursday, July 1, 2010
Dynamo

Dan Gargan headed home Fuad Ibrahim's corner kick in the 85th minute to give Toronto FC a 1-1 tie with the Houston Dynamo on Thursday night.

Brian Ching's goal in the 73rd minute, also off a header on a corner kick, gave a Houston (5-7-3) the lead and followed two red cards about 11 minutes earlier that left each side with 10 players.

Each team played a man short after the 62nd minute with red cards handed to Toronto's Julian de Guzman and Houston's Joseph Ngwenya. It came after a skirmish deep in the Toronto end after Ngwenya continued on despite being called for a foul.

Toronto (5-4-4) picked up another red card just before the end of the game when Amadou Sanyang was sent off for his second yellow card of the match.

Drab draw sees Portugal through

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Two nations divided by a common language and a long-gone empire both advanced to the round of 16 on Friday as Portugal and Brazil tested the patience of their referee, Benito Archundia of Mexico, after a thoroughly mean-spirited goalless draw whose few scoring chances went mostly to the European side.

A blizzard of yellow cards before half-time — four to Portugal and three to Brazil — demonstrated that although there might not have been much riding on this match in terms of qualification for the knock-out round since both sides were already as good as through, there was certainly some sort of pride at stake.
But, it was probably not the sort of entertainment anticipated by the 62,712 spectators who had made this the first of the tournament's fixtures, after those involving the host nation, to become a sell-out.

Trips, dives and wild lunges were all swiftly punished. The worst incident occurred when Pepe, the Portugal midfield player, was booked in the 40th minute for a spiteful stamp on the achilles tendon of Felipe Melo, his opposite number.

Three minutes later, Melo took clumsy retaliation and was shown a yellow card of his own.

The referee had barely put his card away before Dunga made the substitution, clearly anxious not to lose a player who, in partnership with Gilberto Silva, provides such an effective shield for his defence.

One player had a special need to stay on the referee's good side. Cristiano Ronaldo versus Brazil was always going to be fun, even if the Portugal captain, after picking up a booking in the opening match against the Ivory Coast, had to watch his step if he wanted to take part in the round of 16. His success in that respect balanced his failure to get any of several long-range free-kicks on target.

Lacking the controversially suspended Kaka and the injured Elano, and having decided to give Robinho an afternoon on the bench, Dunga inserted a new trio of Nilmar, Julio Baptista and Dani Alves in between his striker, Luis Fabiano, and the two holding midfield players. Baptista, like Robinho and Elano, is one of those players considered not good enough for the Premier League but who seem to be adequate for Brazil's needs.

IMMEDIATE CONCERN

The danger was always that Ivory Coast's score against North Korea, coming in from Nelspruit, would be of more immediate concern than the exchanges here, particularly if the total started to mount towards the seven with which Portugal gave themselves an impressive goal difference in their second match.

But, there was never a shortage of incident, and there was even some football, particularly when Ronaldo got into his stride 15 minutes into the second period, outpacing two Brazil defenders on a run from the halfway line. Lucio's desperate interception succeeded only in turning the ball across the face of goal to Pepe, whose stabbed shot, under pressure from Cesar, flew wide of the left-hand post.

As the Brazilian goalkeeper received treatment following the collision, it could be seen that he was wearing a supportive corset.

Unless, of course, he had given consideration in advance to the probable nature of this encounter, and it was actually body armour.
