Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu left for the US late Monday night for a meeting the next day with President Barack Obama, perhaps not carrying any dramatic new diplomatic initiative, but at least bringing a message of significant changes in what goods Israel will allow into the Gaza Strip.

Hours before Netanyahu was to board his plane for Washington, Foreign Ministry director-general Yossi Gal and Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Maj.-Gen. Eitan Dangot unveiled the principles behind a detailed list of items Israel will not allow into the Gaza Strip. Everything not on that list will be let in.

Israel seizes new Gaza-bound aid ship: activist

Israeli forces took an Irish-owned ship bound for Gaza Saturday, boarding the Rachel Corrie, a 55 km (35 miles) in the Mediterranean, a spokeswoman for the campaign group supporting the ship said.

It was unclear whether there was any violence, even though the board had said beforehand that they would not oppose.

An Israeli military spokesman said she had no information. Israel had said it would not let the ship through.

The ship is named after an American pro-Palestinian activist killed in Gaza Strip in 2003, took five days after a convoy of six was stopped, including a Turkish ship, of which nine men were killed by Israeli commandos, who stormed aboard.

Among those on board of Rachel Corrie, said activists were Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire of Northern Ireland and Denis Halliday, an Irish former high-ranking official in the UN.

Less than three years ago, Shimon Peres addressed the Turkish Grand National Assembly - Turkey's parliament - in Ankara.

It was the first time an Israeli president had addressed the legislators in a Muslim country, a gesture that spoke a lot about the extraordinary relationship between Israel and Turkey, a relationship that goes back to the beginning of Turkish recognition of the Jewish state in 1949.

Unique among Muslim countries in the region, Turkey has strong trade relations with Israel.
The Turkish military to buy weapons from Israel and train its armed forces, and in 2008 Turkey hosted more than half a million Israeli tourists, making it their preferred overseas destination.
What went wrong?

Over the past 18 months, the two countries reels from a diplomatic crisis to another, culminating in furious Turkish reaction to Israel's failed attempt to block the convoy from reaching Gaza.

All military cooperation has been frozen, and Israeli tourists to cancel planned trips to Turkey.

But the organizers were still trying to negotiate with the Cypriot establishment before noon on Saturday to try to arrange the transfer to the flotilla of a group of 25 multi-national parliamentarians are waiting on the island.

"We are currently operating at the limits of Cypriot water to try and negotiate with the establishment," said Thomas Summer Houdeville, a French pro-Palestinian activist on board the vessels, said.

The Cypriot establishment "yesterday evening (Friday) will be the captains of the boats that tried to take the parliamentarians on board," he told AFP by telephone, adding that the sailors were on the loose shortly afterwards.

The organizers accused the Cyprus administration reneging on an earlier agreement to allow the flotilla to sail from Cyprus waters, after which the Israeli press that Nicosia has rejected.

Flotilla had originally been due to sail on Friday.

"We will not start before Saturday, but the boats are still under development," Audrey bum of the Free Gaza pressure group that organized the multi-national flotilla AFP Friday.

"We have changed the coordinates twice because Israel allegedly has in danger to capture the Turkish ship, so we decided to postpone getting all the boats together," she added.

"This has delayed it one day at a time, because changing coordinates takes time ... There were also technological tribulations with one of the boats, so we had to move passengers from the Turkish one," said the bum.
