BJP meet aims to woo minority votes

Friday, July 2, 2010

PATNA: Starting with Bihar, the BJP has set itself on wooing minority sections by organizing their state-level conference, specially of Muslims, who identify with Urdu language, constitute the biggest segment, and also account for around 17 per cent of the state’s population.

The state conference is slated for July 14 here at Shri Krishna Memorial Hall. State BJP minority front president Abdul Rehman said, “It is largely believed that Muslims are not inclined towards the BJP. We want to end this myth. The party’s Central leadership is also favourably inclined towards it.”

Party’s national spokesman Syed Shahnawaz Hussain would participate, and the consent of the party’s in-charge of Bihar affairs Anant Kumar is being sought. Obviously, the bid of the state BJP for image makeover is expected to go well with the party’s national president Nitin Gadkari, whose major assignment is ensuring the success of the party in the forthcoming assembly elections. As a part of the same, the Central leadership held its two-day National Executive meet here, beginning June 12.

While the motions of the meet were gone through, the likely election tour of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi brought the JD(U)-BJP alliance almost to breaking point, as CM Nitish Kumar gave overt signals that he was not favourably inclined towards Modi’s expected tour. In this context, the state BJP minority front’s state conference has acquired an added significance.

“We want to clarify to all that the BJP is the party of all sections and communities, including Muslims,” said Rehman, adding: “The Congress, RJD and similar other parties brand the BJP as a communal party, and then seek the votes of Muslims. But Muslims think otherwise. The Sachar and Ranganath Mishra Committee recommendations have shown that the condition of Muslims, in general, is worse than that of Dalits.

These parties should be held responsible for it, because they ruled the state for most of the period. The NDA is seeking votes of Muslims on the basis of work that its government has done for them.” Rhetorics apart, state BJP vice-president and spokesman Sanjay Mayukh said that the exact number of Muslims enrolled in the party could not be known, but Rehman put the number at around one lakh, and also said that the plan was to mobilize 10,000 of them for the July 14 conference.

“But all of them might not come,” he said, citing various factors, and also added that the campaign of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad against the grant of land to AMU Extension Centre at Kishanganj by the Nitish Kumar government and against Bangla infiltration was no obstacle.

Is Narendra Modi a liability for BJP outside Guj?

Saturday, June 19, 2010
Narendra Modi

He has looked the part. Steely eyed, unsmiling, an inflexible jaw line. In the world that Narendra Modi inhabits, any sign of weakness could be a fatal error. Any suggestion that he is less than what he appears to be would give his critics - and they are legion - just the flicker of hope that Modi is, after all, vulnerable. And the weak don't last the week in politics.

Modi lives up to the title of the "saffron strongman, " conferred on him by his liberal detractors, with ease. A primary reason for his nonchalance is Gujarat's strong economic indicators, endorsed by business celebrities - recall the confidence with which Ratan Tata chose Gujarat as the new home for his Nano factory. Again, on the ideological front, Modi has been very good at projecting himself as an uncompromising voice on terrorism

Snap ties with BJP: JD(U) Muslim leaders tell CM

Sunday, June 13, 2010
Nitish Kumar

The Muslim leaders of the JD(U) are happy over what they called "chief minister Nitish Kumar's befitting reply to the conspiracy hatched by Gujarat CM Narendra Modi" through an advertisement.

"We are in an advantageous position. We'll triumph even if we contest assembly polls separately," said Rajya Sabha member Ali Anwar. "Modi made a move on the chessboard and Nitish ran it down. Let him make another move and we are ready to reply in the same language," he added.

On Saturday evening when there should have been a big party at the CM's residence for the BJP leaders attending the national executive meeting here, the place was deserted with only few JD(U) leaders sitting in the lawns and the labourers dismantling the 'shamianas' which had been pitched for the dinner. The dinner was cancelled by the CM abruptly.

Monazir Hasan, member of Lok Sabha, said the time is ripe now to severe ties with the BJP. "This adertisement is a well-planned conspiracy to malign Nitish's image which has touched new heights at the national level. People like Modi do not want him to become politically stronger," Hasan alleged.

Both Anwar and Hasan were closeted with Nitish late on Saturday evening, along with other leaders. Most of them were of the opinion that the hard-hitting reply by Nitish has left the BJP speechless and demoralized. "For over four years this government is running smoothly on an agreed agenda. Now we will not allow the BJP to enforce its agenda," said Anwar.

Most of them agreed that the JD(U) should not hasten to break its alliance with the BJP and wait for its next move. Anwar said the issue will be discussed threadbare at a proper party forum.

The JD(U) leaders are gaga over what they called the "bold stand" taken by the chief minister in an election year. Hasan said Muslims have enthusiastically thrown their weight behind the JD(U) and the party cannot afford to lose their support. Muslims constitute about 16 per cent of the total population of Bihar.

Nitish's stand was also supported by senior leader and former CM Jagannath Mishra. He said the Bihar chief minister's reaction to Modi's move was praise worthy. "It has further refurbished Nitish's secular credentials. This also shows his strong commitment not to compromise on secular agenda," Mishra said.

Tata inaugurates Gujarat Nano plant

Wednesday, June 2, 2010
Nano plant

Almost two years after it was forced to move the factory for the production of "the world's cheapest car" Nano from West Bengal's Singur middle protests against land gaining, Tata Motors Wednesday inaugurated the new Nano plant in Gujarat's Sanader.

The new factory in Sanader was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata, who seven years ago dreamed of creating an affordable family car for the ordinary man.

"When I came here first in an industrial visit invited by Gujarat Chief Minister, I was told that if they (the Nano plant) is not in Gujarat, I'll be a fool.

"I'm no longer stupid for investing in plant in Gujarat," said Tata at the opening of the factory.

Spread over about 1100 acres, the area of Sanader has been created on the n investment of around Rs 2000 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, Modi said: "The revolution comes with Ford in the early 20th century with small car now being copied by Ratan Tata with his Nano."

Every middle class families dream of owning a car is met by Sanader at the inauguration of Nano plant, "he added.

Ratan Tata's dream to create a car that costs only Rs one lakh crore had challenges - both technical and political - since it was conceived in 2003.

At a time when costs were rising, with production in a comfortable mini-car powered by a 623cc engine that provides a competitive miles, was a big enough challenge for the engineers of Tata Motors.

While Tata was able to overcome it, the group does not make political challenge from the Trinamool Congress, and had to move industrial output from its original location at Singur in West Bengal to Sanader in Gujarat in October 2008. Tata, at that time had already set over Rs 1,000 crore in Singur.

The delay not only the original plans for the commercial launch of Nano in about five months, but also affected availability.

Till the time Sanader plant was finished, the company went ahead with the limited production of Nano - touted as world's cheapest car with a factory-gate price of Rs 1,00,000 (slightly over $ 2000) - from Pant Nagar in Himachal Pradesh.

Bookings for the car was opened in April 2009 and deliveries began in July of that year. It has so far delivered more than 35,000 units. But only the first 1,00,000 customers are sure to get the car on an ex-factory price of Rs 1,00,000.

Sanader The plant has capacity to produce 2.5 lakh units a year, which can later be increased to five lakh units a year. Pilot commercial production of Nano on Sanader has already begun.
