Google alters course in China net dispute
Wednesday, June 30, 2010
Google Inc. said Tuesday it will stop automatically rerouting users of its China search site to its Hong Kong site after Beijing said the company would lose its mainland internet licence if the tactic continued.
Google shut down its China-based search engine March 22 to avoid co-operating with the communist government's internet filtering and has rerouted users to its unfiltered site in Hong Kong. But Google said regulators told the company its internet licence, which expires Wednesday, would not be renewed if that continues.
"They made it clear to us that they did not think the redirect was acceptable," said a Google spokeswoman, Jessica Powell. She declined to say what reasons the government gave for its objections.
On a company blog, Google's chief legal officer, David Drummond, said Monday that Chinese authorities told the company "if we continue redirecting users our internet content provider licence will not be renewed."
Google still operates a music download service and several other features on Google.cn that are not affected by filtering regulations and Powell said it wants those services to continue.
Hong Kong site has no filtering
Instead of automatically being switched to Google.hk, visitors to Google.cn now see a tab that says in Chinese "We have moved to google.com.hk." Users can click on that tab to move to the site in Hong Kong, which is a Chinese territory but has Western-style civil liberties and no internet filtering.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman, Qin Gang, said he had not seen Google's announcement and could not comment on it. However, he added, "I would like to stress that the Chinese government encourages foreign enterprises to operate in China according to law."
Google's announcement in January that it no longer wished to comply with Chinese internet filtering was an embarrassment for communist leaders, who want foreign companies to help develop China's technology industries.
Google was the last major foreign internet company to operate its own China-based service and people in the industry are watching to see whether communist authorities allow it to continue operating other services.
Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., also hopes to keep a research centre in China, an advertising sales team that generates most of its revenue in the country and a fledgling mobile phone business.
Play Pac-Man on Google's Homepage Today | 30th Anniversary Tribute
Friday, May 21, 2010
Google has once again outdone themselves with their latest search page Doodle. To celebrate the 30th centenary of the legendary game Pacman, Google has released a free game playable directly from the website.
Today's Google logo Pacman go beyond any exact logo that Google has done before.Believe me, I know. I have been closely and in my opinion with the Google logo as part of my latest story, the special Google logos, sliced and diced over the years. This is the first time public have been able to interact with the logo. To play a freakin 'game!
But if Pac-Man grew to turn out to be the best selling coin-operated games in the past, Google Doodle was far less popular among Internet user.
"What is it with the maddening AUDIO game PacMan SEARCH ago today? wrote one of more than 200 company to Google's help page, most complaint about Pac-Man doodle.
"Have you been hack? I thought I had thin a virus, "wrote one more.
Most of the messages restricted too many insults to do again.
Other online commentary were more charitable, but wonder about the penalty of the doodle on efficiency.
For some extra fun, you can activate a two-player mode by urgent the "Insert Coin" when the game has by now started and play as both Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, the latter of which you be in charge of with WASD-keys.
