Hitting the wave: The tsunami rears up in front of a Japanese coast guard vessel in an otherwise clam pacific

This is the moment a Japanese Coast Guard ship was confronted by the tsunami that hit the coast of Japan on Friday.
Amazing video footage shows a huge wave looming on the horizon of an otherwise calm Pacific.

The wall of water was created by an earthquake off the coast of Japan, and it is believed to be the first footage of the tsunami in the open ocean.
But as their ship safely rode the wave, its crew were powerless to do anything but warn their countrymen it was on its way.

The ship is lifted up tens of feet in the air and splashes down safely on the other side. A second smaller wave hits the ship minutes later.
When the wave hit Japan, the power generated by the earthquake sent water surging over the coast, flattening scores of coastal towns

Alam Ara: 80 years since Indian Talkies began

Monday, March 14, 2011
Eighty years ago, Indian cinema achieved a landmark on this day when director Ardeshir Irani made Alam Ara, the first ever Indian film with sound. The film also marked the beginning of filmi music.

Alam Ara was first screened at the Majestic Cinema in Bombay on March 14, 1931. It ran for two hours and four minutes, and used a Tanar Sound System to record the dialogues.

Irani recognised the importance that sound would have on the cinema, and raced to complete Alam Ara before several other contemporary sound films. The film was based on a Parsi play written by Joseph David. David later served as a writer for Irani's film company.

March 14, 2011, is a special day for Indian cinema. It marks the 80th anniversary of Alam Ara - the first Indian film with sound.

On this day in 1931, Alam Ara debuted at the Majestic Cinema in Mumbai causing such frenzy among the audience that the police had to be called in.

Alam Ara
Alam Ara also featured the first song of Indian cinema, De De Khuda Ke Naam Par, sung by actor Wazir Mohammed Khan.

The film, directed by Ardeshir Irani, is a love story between a prince and a gypsy girl and was based on a Parsi play.

The sad part, however, is that as a result of a fire at the National Film Archive of India at Pune in 2003, the last surviving print of Alam Ara was destroyed, and the film is no longer available in its original format.

This Pune based film maker is credited with Alam Ara for bringing talkies to India, just four years after the introduction of talking movies in America. Though the credit stands, there is not a single copy of Alam Ara after the last prints of the movie were destroyed in a fire in 2003 at the National Film Archives, Pune. The Indian Government till this day regularly advertises to seek anyone who might have a copy of the movie.

Alam Ara was based on a play by Joseph David about a king and his two wives who compete with each other to give birth to the kingdom's heir. The tale, mixed with romance, infidelity and action, was a treat to the ears with its evergreen songs. One among them was the 'De De Khuda Ke Naam Par' which is the mother of all Indian songs. Alam Ara, which means 'The light of the world' in Urdu, was truly instrumental in bringing light and 'sound' to Indian cinema.

Japan's nuclear crisis: the causes and the risks

Sunday, March 13, 2011
Japan's nuclear
A British nuclear expert has told The First Post that the explosion at the Fukushima I nuclear plant looks likely to be a "significant nuclear event" with a bigger impact on public health than the 1979 meltdown at Three Mile Island.

John Large, who has been a nuclear analyst since the mid-1960s and is a Fellow of the Royal Society, says the Japanese government may be significantly downplaying the seriousness of the accident – and he believes it could have far-reaching consequences for the nuclear industry worldwide.
What damage was caused?

The blast tore the roof off the building and damaged surrounding walls. Four workers were injured. Japanese authorities told the International Atomic Energy Authority that the explosion happened outside the reactor's primary containment vessel, which appears to be intact.

Japan's nuclear

What is the radiation risk?

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (Nisa) reported higher levels of radiation around the power station over the weekend and the presence of caesium-137 and iodine-131 in the air. These are radioactive isotopes produced in fission reactions. The isotopes were released when steam was vented from the reactor.

Radiation monitors around the site recorded a radiation level of 500 microSieverts per hour on Saturday afternoon, a quarter of the annual dose the general population is exposed to due to natural background radiation. The level of radiation at the power station's main gate fell on Sunday to a very low level of 3.2 microSieverts.

Fukushima I is just 40 miles from the epicentre of the closest of 248 separate seismic shocks which have taken place in the past week off the coast of Japan. A 'boiling water' plant, it has six reactors.

Dramatic footage of an explosion at the plant's No 1 reactor on Saturday has commanded global attention. Now the Japanese government says it is fighting to prevent a second meltdown at No 3 reactor.

Meanwhile, sister plant Fukushima II, which is just 11km further away from the earthquake epicentre, is also in trouble. Cooling systems have broken at three of its four reactors – and at least one reactor has failed.

Efforts are underway to evacuate 210,000 people living within 20km of Fukushima I. Earlier, on Friday, 2,800 people were taken from their homes by coach.

When will the power station be safe?

The strategy of pumping sea water into nuclear reactors is untested. It could take several days to bring the temperature and pressure of the reactor cores down to within safe limits.

If the cooling fails, the reactors could overheat and cause a total meltdown of the radioactive fuel rods in the core. This would only lead to a major release of radiation if the reactor's containment vessel was breached.

The Japanese authorities have classified the sitiuation as a level 4 "accident with local consequences" on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES). The scale runs from zero for a deviation in normal operations to seven for a major accident. The Three Mile Island incident in 1979 was a five and Chernobyl in 1986 was a seven on the scale.

Mamata Banerjee

On expected lines Mamata Banerjee declared more projects for West Bengal, amid protests by Bihar leaders like Lalu Prasad and Sharad Yadav

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called it a common man’s budget, while the Opposition criticized it with the communists, her political rivals in West Bengal, slamming the minister for failing to implement the earlier projects she announced.

She said the metro railway network of Kolkata will expand while a metro coach factory will be set up near Singur and a rail industrial park in Nandigram in West Bengal.

She admitted that the Railway is passing through a difficult phase and announced to raise Rs 10,000 crore via bonds.

She also announced shelters for thousands of homeless, giving a human face to the budget.

Across India, however, passengers reacted to lack of safety measures for passengers.

“It is an election budget. I am happy with the projects and trains announced but passenger safety has been ignored as before,” said a commuter at Howrah Station in Kolkata.

A total of 56 new express trains were proposed in the Railway Budget.

Vizianagaram-Rayagada-

Titlagarh-Raipur, Rosa-Sitapur-Burhwal and Alwar-Rewari.
Feasibility studies will be taken up for other sections, she said.

Mamata said a Central Organization for Project Implementation (COPI) will be set up with offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore to ensure timely project execution and proper utilization of funds allotted for works.

10 Mistakes Everyone Should Make Before They Die

Wednesday, February 16, 2011
Life's toughest lessons are learned by making mistakes. It's what we learn from our experiences, the good, the bad, the ugly, that matter most. Have some fun with these tongue in cheek common mistakes that (we think) everyone should commit at least once in a lifetime.

1. Getting married
Everyone should take a trip down the aisle or stand before the justice of the peace just once in their lifetime. The Wedding March may very well be the opportunity to spend the rest of your life in wedded bliss...or could be a very expensive yet vital experiment in disaster. Either way, consider it a lesson learned

2. Getting hopelessly, falling down drunk

At least once in your life, drink far too much and just let loose. Pour down the shots of tequila. Dance on the bar. Just be careful as drinking excessively has severely negative impacts on your health (albeit a nasty hangover.) And as always, if you drink, don't drive. Few things are more expensive than a D.W.I. or regret.

3. Driving the wrong way on a one way street or highway

Taking a wrong turn and driving into oncoming traffic is quickly remedied with a u-turn so have no fear. The thrill of playing chicken to the sound of furious motorists is often short lived, as the men in blue find this driving offense ticket worthy.

4. Falling down in public

Taking a trip and landing flat on your face or bottom is a great way to learn how to laugh at yourself. And also a great way to garner laughter from innocent bystanders. Either way, falling down in public is a vital and important process in coming to terms with our infallibility.

5. The "sneeze and shake"

Whether intentional or not, we've all made the mistake of sneezing into your hand or wiping your nose and then shaking hands with someone. On the gross factor scale, this one ranks rather highly. And in terms of hilarity, it's off the charts. If you haven't already executed the "sneeze and shake," throw it on your list of things to do soon.

6. Reading a lousy book

We've all found ourselves caught in the pages of a terrible book, rereading the same paragraph over and over again, wondering if we should give up or keep going. keep trudging ahead. If nothing else, that copy of Eat, Pray, Love will make great kindle for your fire when you're through.

7. Singing karaoke

Nothing belts a good time better than screaming the lyrics of your favorite song in the company of folks who can't sing any better than you. Just be sure to load up on the booze (see #2 on this list) and perhaps stuff some cotton balls into your pockets for those "karaokers" who can't carry a tune to save your ears from splitting.

8. Workplace romance

Perhaps the biggest faux pas to commit is engaging in a workplace romance. The inherit lesson one can learn from committing such an offense is more beneficial than not. By all means, flirt away. Just tread carefully and learn from the experience. And, as a word of warning, polluting the waters of the job pool is often frowned upon by higher ups and makes for an awkward work environment after the romance fades

9. "Losing" your child's pet or saying it ran away

We've all been here: waking up one morning to the sound of your daughter's chirping parakeet with your head screaming "I can't stand this bird!" Or you notice your son's fish doing the dead man's float. Whatever the case, disposing of the pet claiming it was lost or ran away may be the most humble way to delay the life experience of death.

10. Pulling a one night stand

Maybe you're freshly dumped, maybe you're just in the need of a little human touch. Whatever the case may be, pulling a one night stand may very well be one of life's greatest learning experiences. One night stands can go either way: they may build you up if you've been wounded in love but they also may be highly destructive.

Bonus Mistake

Nothing adds to allure and bragging rights faster than a trip to jail courtesy of the police car express. So you mooned a neighbor. Over consumed alcohol and flashed a friend. Or pulled a little breaking and entering to propel your career in pranks. Whatever the case, whatever the reason for handcuffs, getting arrested lends a colorful story to tell over and over again

Thomas Edison’s 164th Birthday Celebrated With Google Logo

Friday, February 11, 2011
Thomas Edison
Days after your logo celebrated the birthday of writer Jules Verne, your home-page Google Doodle today marks the 164th birthday of Thomas Edison.

At this rate, a user could become accustomed to equally inventive logos every morn.

Google is featuring a special Google logo, also known as Google Doodle, for the 164th birthday of Thomas Edison. The logo illustrates some of Edison’s most famous inventions including the electric light bulb, phonograph, and the motion picture camera. Edison holds over 1,000 U.S. patents and is the most well-known inventor of all time.

Our favorite touch about today's animated logo is the luminous light bulb that brightens and fades, spotlighting the inventor's electric-light contributions. The catch, of course, is that it was Britain's Edward Swan who "invented" the light bulb; but it was Edison who patented and popularized the electric light bulb in the United States. (Edison and Swan are said to have later merged their cross-the-Pond companies.)

Prior to his death in 1931, the Wizard of Menlo Park held more than 1,000 patents, including for electrical printing machines, telephone technology, motion-picture cameras, mechanical vote-recorders, the stock ticker and the phonograph.

Jawaharlal Nehru University MMS Scandal Clips

Monday, February 7, 2011

A pornographic MMS showing two Jawaharlal Nehru University hostellers making love has rocked the prestigious institution, prompting the administration to hastily investigate the scandal. The high resolution MMS, shot in April last year, started doing the rounds of the campus recently and came to the notice of the security office last Thursday.

The chief proctor’s office said the boy and the girl in the video were both students of the School of Languages. The girl has since quit campus without completing her studies. A computer science student is also under scanner for his alleged involvement in the making of the 1GB video which seems to have been professionally shot.

“All we can say right now is that it appears that the two boys made the video in April last year. What we are investigating is why it was circulated now — eight-nine months later? Or is it that it was in circulation but the administration didn’t know of it?” said JNU’s chief proctor H B Bohidar.

The matter has not been officially reported to the police but the cops have launched their own probe. “We are aware of the MMS allegations and have decided to ask the Vasant Kunj police to investigate. The ACP will seek a report from the JNU authorities and give it to us. Depending on the report, we will pursue the case further,” said DCP (south) H G S Dhaliwal.

JNU authorities said they are trying to find out if the video was made for commercial use. “The MMS is of high resolution and shot in a very professional manner which indicates use of high-end equipment and technology,” said chief proctor Bohidar.

Jules Verne

Jules Verne

Jules Gabriel Verne (French pronunciation: [ʒyl vɛʁn]; February 8, 1828 – March 24, 1905) was a French Breton author who pioneered the science-fiction genre. He is best known for novels such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), A Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before air travel and practical submarines were invented, and before practical ameans of space travel had been devised. He is the third most translated individual author in the world, according to Index Translationum. Some of his books have been made into films. Verne, along with Hugo Gernsback and H. G. Wells, is often popularly referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction".

Biography
Jules Verne

Jules Gabriel Verne was born in Nantes, Brittany in France, to Pierre Verne, an attorney, and his wife, Sophie. The eldest of five children, Jules spent his early years at home with his parents in the bustling harbor city of Nantes. The family spent summers in a country house just outside the city, on the banks of the Loire River. Here Verne and his brother Paul would often rent a boat for a Franc a day. The sight of the many ships navigating the river sparked Jules's imagination, as he describes in the autobiographical short story Souvenirs d'Enfance et de Jeunesse. At the age of nine, Jules and Paul, of whom he was very fond, were sent to boarding school at the Saint Donatien College (Petit séminaire de Saint-Donatien). As a child, he developed a great interest in travel and exploration, a passion he showed as a writer of adventure stories and science fiction. His interest in writing often cost him progress in other subjects.

At the boarding school, Verne studied Latin, which he used in his short story Le Mariage de Monsieur Anselme des Tilleuls in the mid 1850s. One of his teachers may have been the French inventor Brutus de Villeroi, professor of drawing and mathematics at the college in 1842, and who later became famous for creating the US Navy's first submarine, the USS Alligator.
