JaMarcus Russell jailed on drug charge

Tuesday, July 6, 2010
JaMarcus Russell

JaMarcus Russell, a big name in Mobile and the NFL was arrested Monday on a drug charge.

Undercover Narcotics Agents with the Mobile County Sheriff's office arrested Russell at his home in South Mobile County Monday afternoon. "It's an ongoing investigation," said Lori Myles with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the narcotic found was codeine syrup, it is unclear why he had it.

"We understand that typically sometime this codeine syrup is mixed with a beverage, like sprite, and they call it sip-sip," Myles said.

The amount that was found has not been released. Sheriff's deputies said there were multiple people in Russell's home at the time of the arrest but Russell was the only person taken into custody.

"It's a felony, it's my understanding it's his first. He could be probation, or it could be drug court. Whatever the court decides," said Myles.

Shortly after Russell was booked, his bond of 25-hundred dollars was posted.

Russell was a high school football standout. He signed one of the biggest rookie contracts in the history of the NFL. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders, was released from his contract in May, just three years after being the No. 1 overall draft pick. He graduated from high school in Mobile and played for Louisiana State University for three years.

The roundup of a suspected Russian spy ring did more than disrupt a years-old deep-cover operation inside the United States — it cast a shadow over President Obama’s effort to transform the relationship between the two countries. The timing of the arrests, coming barely 72 hours after President Dmitri A. Medvedev’s White House visit, frustrated Mr. Obama’s team. But as prosecutors assemble their case, Mr. Obama has resolved not to let the ghosts of the 20th century get in the way of his goals in the 21st.
