Charice Chasing Teenage Fans
Sunday, May 16, 2010
The teenage wonder kid from the Philippines has been impressive audiences with his big voice and Celine Dion covers on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and other shows in two years. Last week she was on Winfrey show for a fourth time.
But now, when she released her debut album, Charice will find itself a serious challenge as she tries to translate her success with adult audiences to their peers.
I have sung great songs, and it is actually the first time they will hear me singing Justin Bieber-type singer, Miley Cyrus-type songs, "says 18-year-old said in his heavily accented English." I'm just excited for all teens to hear my album. "
Charice had come during his tenure with Dion or Whitney Houston, two of his idols, it would be easier to take this step. At the time, dominated the big-ballad singers with big voices pop radio. These days, the track behind the big voice that counts.
Rethinking old school
David Foster, the Grammy-winning mentor behind Charice, probably knows that better than anyone. A producer who created hits for Houston, Dion, Barbra Streisand, Toni Braxton and scores of other top names you know Foster's sound is not what makes pop radio more although he is the producer behind the multi-platinum stars Josh Groban and Michael Buble.
"I knew that if I produced album, it would be an adult-oriented. It would skew older. It would be a quick easy sale, but ultimately, it is very, very difficult to displace younger after the elderly, so we made a conscious decision about moving the young people first, "he said." I do not want to say that we fell apart under the pressure of having to go younger, but I think we hit it square. "
Although Foster and his sister, Jayme is the album's executive producers, leaving the majority of music-making to young writers and producers as Ryan Tedd of OneRepublic, who proposes to Beyonce's "Halo" and Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love". The album's first single is "Pyramid", with the songs Iyaz.
"I'm just like teenagers in love ... they love this very catchy and very romantic words from all these young artists," said Charice. "So I thought that this album ... they love it, all the texts, all melody and music. "
Already on the lists
"Pyramid" is No. 2 on the dance charts, but it has not translated to pop radio. Foster is aware of the challenge it takes to make a hit, but he believes Charice have much to add to the scene. "There is a shortage of organic music right now, and it is fine - just the phase we are in," he says. "I think there is room for something more musical."
There is no doubt Charice got it. During a recent interview, little of the singer belt out "Pyramid" on request, performed a radical interpretations of Houston's "I will always love you" to an audience of four, and then continued to sing - even on the way out the door.
Singing has taken Charice - Born Charmaine Clarice Pempengco Relucio - since she was a child growing up in the Philippines. Raised with her brother by a single mother, she sang in local competitions and appeared on TV talent show in the Philippines and South Korea.
Fans posted clips of her on YouTube and she was a sensation. Soon she was invited to sing on "Ellen" and "Oprah Winfrey, and connected with Foster.
So far, her rise unfolded like a fairy tale. But Charice know there are obstacles that try to capture the American audience. "It is very, very hard ... which is a lot of good pop stars here. ... They are all talented," she said. "I do not know if Americans will love me, because I'm from another country."
