MCC Gardening Group - gardening with [and on] a heart!
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
To start the new gardening season off at Mazarron Country Club, members of the Gardening Group decided it would be a good idea to have a barbecue at the top of one of the pieces of ground that has been transformed since the Spring into an attractively planted and gravelled area, opposite Manzana 28 and between Manzanas 33 & 31. So a group of around a dozen members and friends gathered together on
MCC Gardening Group - Barbecue planned for 8th September
Monday, August 24, 2009
After the first very successful barbecue held by the Neighbourhood Concern Gardening Group at Mazarron Country Club in mid-July, plans are now well underway for a second fundraising barbecue in early September. Obviously the word is being passed around MCC about the next barbecue and posters are being displayed there so people know about it. I'm happy to include below a copy of the poster they
MCC Gardening Group - watering's the thing!
Monday, July 27, 2009
Well, giving the plants badly-needed water in addition to laying more membrane and gravel, with the aim of giving plant roots some extra protection from the intense drying heat. And doing some minor planting of donated plants, now not really being the right season to be putting too many new plants into the soil (even if you can dig it right now when it's so rock-hard).Yesterday evening (Sunday

It is VERY hot in the Murcia region just at present and indeed today I saw a report in La Verdad advising that an Orange Alert for dangerously high temperatures in the region over the next several hours has been announced, with a warning that temperatures could reach 40+ degC.So, a couple of days ago it was that some brave souls from the Mazarron Country Club Gardening Group decided to undertake
MCC Gardening Group Fund-raising Barbecue - 15 July 2009
Saturday, July 18, 2009
From what I have read and heard from direct contacts with people who were there, the Barbecue last Wednesday evening, hosted by the MCC Gardening Group to raise funds for their future activities, was a huge success and everyone seems to have enjoyed the evening a lot. Unfortunately as I am not currently in Spain I couldn't be there myself, but am really grateful to have received a large number of
MCC Gardening Group - it's HOT out there!
Monday, June 22, 2009
Yesterday the gardening group gathered at it's new start-time of 8pm for its regular Sunday evening gardening activities, now restricted because of the heat mainly to watering and weeding, although the hardy gardeners seemingly can't resist getting into moving rocks as well, or even trying to dig holes for new plants in the now near rock-hard soil! These notes are based on information supplied by
MCC Gardening Group - Barbecue planned for 15th July
Tuesday, June 16, 2009
Some of the people involved in the Neighbourhood Concern Gardening Group at Mazarron Country Club have been busy for a few weeks putting together plans to hold a fundraising barbecue to help with the group's gardening activities. Now they are ready to let everybody know about what is planned and will be distributing leaflets and posters to let people at MCC know about it. I'm happy to include
MCC Gardening Group - "Flashback to Manzanas 31/33"
Friday, June 12, 2009
Hazel Davison has sent me some photographs this evening of a part of the open ground between Manzanas 31 & 33, opposite Manzana 28, that she and Richard Dawson (and perhaps a few others, I'm not sure) have been working on yesterday and today, to lay gravel around some of the plants put into the soil on previous Sundays, with the aim of inhibiting weed growth and helping to retain moisture in the
MCC Gardening Group - more solid progress last Sunday
Wednesday, June 10, 2009
Last Sunday (7th June) the Gardening Group continued working mainly on the area between Manzanas 19 & 20 (although some moved back to the ground between Manzanas 31 & 33 to do weeding and tidying-up).These notes are based on information kindly supplied by Barbara Franken, who also sent me the photographs.(I also gleaned some information from various message exchanges between Gardening Group

... and prepare to move on to another area next Sunday. These notes are based on information supplied by Barbara Franken, who also sent me the photographs.Last Sunday (24th May) the Gardening Group put in place the 'finishing touches' at the top of the ground between Manzanas 31 & 33, in advance of plans to move onto the area between Manzanas 19 & 20 next week. However we have every intention of

The Neigbourhood Concern Gardening Group had its fourth Sunday evening of activity on 17th May. I wasn't there myself this time, as I was due to leave MCC for Scotland - where I am now - a few days later and was busy, frantically even, clearing up the house before my departure. The photographs below were forwarded to me by Barbara (Franken) and taken by Alan (Buck). Barbara provided some of the
The Gardening Group makes further progress last Sunday (10th May)
Wednesday, May 13, 2009
(UPDATE: Barbara has sent me a very nice group photograph of most of those who were there last Sunday, so I have included it in the photographs below as the first image.)The Neigbourhood Concern Gardening Group had its third Sunday evening of activity on 10th May. Although there were fewer of us present this week than on previous Sundays (11, instead of 17 and 19) we still managed to get quite a
MCC Gardening Group - a second Sunday of progress
Tuesday, May 5, 2009
The Neighbourhood Concern Gardening Group had a second very successful and productive hour or so of activity last Sunday evening. Numbers present rose slightly this week with 19 turning up to help - again thanks are due to everyone who came and put so much effort in.The group continues to work on two main sections near the top of the open ground between Manzanas 31 and 33, opposite Manzana 28.
Gardening at MCC - and what a small group of residents have already achieved
Thursday, April 30, 2009
Following on from my article yesterday about the results so far achieved by the 'Neighbourhood Concern Gardening Group' with its Sunday-evening litter- and weed-collection efforts, I have been contacted by Chris Gatenby. His partner Sandra is part of a group of neighbours which has collectively over the past approximately 18 months made great efforts to beautify an earth bank opposite their
MCC Gardening Group gets going
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
A group of residents at Mazarron Country Club have recently been discussing simple and enjoyable ways in which our environment could be made somewhat more pleasing, by beginning to tidy up some of the open spaces, where currently there is quite a lot of litter and rather ragged patches of mainly weeds. Last Sunday about 17 of us turned out to make a small but worthwhile beginning. Prior to
