Israel seizes new Gaza-bound aid ship: activist
Friday, June 4, 2010
Israeli forces took an Irish-owned ship bound for Gaza Saturday, boarding the Rachel Corrie, a 55 km (35 miles) in the Mediterranean, a spokeswoman for the campaign group supporting the ship said.
It was unclear whether there was any violence, even though the board had said beforehand that they would not oppose.
An Israeli military spokesman said she had no information. Israel had said it would not let the ship through.
The ship is named after an American pro-Palestinian activist killed in Gaza Strip in 2003, took five days after a convoy of six was stopped, including a Turkish ship, of which nine men were killed by Israeli commandos, who stormed aboard.
Among those on board of Rachel Corrie, said activists were Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire of Northern Ireland and Denis Halliday, an Irish former high-ranking official in the UN.
