The Village of Mijas ( Mijas Pueblo) is undoubtedly one of the Jewels of the Costa del Sol. This historic village nestles comfortably in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas mountains some 450 meters above sea level which offers the visitor spectacular views over Fuengirola and along the coast and Mediterranean sea. It is a traditional mountain village and so typically Andalucian with its narrow cobbled streets and white washed buildings.
Due to its undying popularity , Mijas can be quite busy and crowded during the high season due to the many coach trips and excursions offered by all the local and regional travel companies. Having said that in most cases it is a joy to walk around and discover this fascinating and beautiful Andalucian village. Popular attractions is the small bullring with its quadrangular exterior, actually one of Spain's oldest rings in existence, the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peña (17th century) or the church of la Concepción (16th century) are some of its principal monuments. On Leaving the Church I would highly recommend a stroll around the old wall and gardens and along to the open Auditorium, if your lucky you may be lucky enough to witness one of the many cultural events hosted there. The Pueblo is also well known for its charming donkey-taxis which offer trips around the centre and outskirts of the Village.
Although the village itself has a population of around 10,000, the actual area owned and covered by the Mijas municipality is quite vast and reportedly one of Spain's richest. It stretches to Benalmadena on its eastern border, Fuengirola to the South, Marbella to the West and to the lovely villages of Coin and Alhaurin to the North. The sub divisions of Mijas include the areas of Las Lagunas situated near the coast adjoining Fuengirola, La Cala, a pretty village with some 12 kms of clean sandy beaches it has become and popular tourist destination and residential enclave for the Expat in its own right, Sitio de Calahonda and Riviera del Sol which are also large residential areas with there own picturesque beaches.
