Friday, May 30, 2008
Kerala is a gateway to paradise. The state offers an enthralling experience with its captivating landscapes, mind blowing backwaters, majestic hills, wildlife parks and sanctuaries, tea plantations, and last but not the least, its stunning sun-kissed beaches. With the hordes of tourists and travelers visiting Kerala for spending holidays, Kerala tourism is rising at great strides. Apart from an excellent getaway to nature, Kerala tourism is also redefined as Kerala Health Tourism, Kerala Backwater Tourism, Kerala Culture Tourism, Kerala Beach Tourism, and many more.

Kerala takes pride in being one of the oldest civilizations on the face of the earth. Historians suggest that Kerala culture is a blend of numerous civilizations, varied customs, practices and beliefs as a result of interaction of Indian as well as overseas cultures. A variety of performing arts such as Koodiyattom, a type of drama or theater and UNESCO-listed human heritage art; Kathakali, a dance drama that depicts ancient epics; Kerala natanam, a popular offshoot of Kathakali; Koothu, a light-hearted comedy performance similar to modern-day stand-up comedy; Mihiniyattam, the dance of the enchantress which is a choreographed performance by women accompanied by music and vocalizations, and many more art performances are unique to Kerala.

The Kerala culture is reflected in its festivals, pilgrimages, literature, music, traditional performances, customs, practices and cuisine. Variety and uniqueness of Kerala's culture may be experienced by being a part of its annual ten-day festival known as Onam. During Onam, a host of colorful sports, cultural programs and rituals are organized. Celebrated at the end of August or beginning of September, the festival is a complete reflection of the rich culture that Kerala boasts of.

The Kerala food is unusual which offers some of the most sumptuous tastes on earth. Keralites are gourmets with a difference. The cuisine is usually hot, spicy, aromatic and flavored. Use of coconut is an integral part of the cuisine. It is used either chopped or grated to garnish the dishes. Coconut milk or paste is used to thicken gravies and its oil is used for cooking. Rice is the staple diet. A typical lunch or dinner may consist of rice, seasonal vegetables cooked in coconut oil with different spices for flavor, dal, seafood curry and a sweet dish as dessert. Seafood is taken almost with every meal. Fish like sardines, tuna, rays, and crabs, mussels and oysters are taken with unique preparations. Apart from meals, different snacks such as banana chips, murku, shakaruperi and many types of halwa are consumed any time during the day.

Spain has been awarded a total of 527 Blue Flags, 455 are for beaches and 72 for Marinas, this relates to a decrease of 49 in respect of 2007.

According to the information released by ( Adeac - The association of Environmental Education for the Consumer ) this slight decline in blue flags is due to the new stricter controls which came into force recently and relates to water quality , the drought and heavy summer rainfalls of 2007 also left its affect on some areas.

According to Jose R.Sanchez of Adeac, the torrential downpours carried materials down from urban areas, dry river beds which has affected swimming water quality.

61 beaches in total lost there Blue Flag status, 22 in Galicia, 15 in Andalucia, 7 from Valencia, 6 in the Pais Vasco, 4 each from Cantabriaand Asturias and 3 in the Canaries. However as beaches from other areas have been awarded the flag the total number was 49 less than 2007.

The famous Poniente beach in Benidorm lost its blue flag status this year his year because of the extensive work being carried out on the “ paseo maritime” sea front.

Ecosystem

Wednesday, May 28, 2008
The term ecosystem was coined in 1930 by Roy Clapham, to denote the physical and biological components of an environment considered in relation to each other as a unit. British ecologist Arthur Tansley later refined the term, describing it as the interactive system established between biocoenosis (a group of living creatures) and their biotope (the environment in which they live).

Central to the ecosystem concept is the idea that living organisms are continually engaged in a set of relationships with every other element constituting the environment in which they exist. The human ecosystem concept is then grounded in the deconstruction of the human/nature dichotomy, and the emergent premise that all species are ecologically integrated with each other, as well as with the abiotic constituents of their biotope.

Things that can go wrong when you buy off-plan in Spain

The Spanish property market, indeed the whole Spanish economy, is in something of a mess at present, partly reflecting what is going on elsewhere in the world-wide economy, but unfortunately partly due also to some of the political infighting in different parts of Spain between the two main political parties. Luckily my own little property was completed on time and is reasonably satisfactory,

Alhambra Palace - Granada

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

The magnificent Alhambra Palace in Granada must be one of my most favourite places to visit in Spain and its located ( in my humble opinion ) in arguably the most beautiful Andalusian city, Granada.

The Alhambra got its name from an Arabic word meaning Reddish due to its colour and is located on top of the "Al-Sabika" hillside with magnificent views over the neighbourhoods of Albaicin, Alcazaba, Granada itself and for miles around the flat plains ( La Vega ) to the south of the city.

The complex is of course located in a strategic position in the area and other remains have been located on the site well before the Muslims arrived. The earliest recordings of the Alhambra date back to the 9th Century and refer to Sawwar ben Hamdun who had to seek refuge there in the year 889.

Buildings, towers, churches, ramparts, gates etc where added and some demolished by the various Caliphas, kings and othe residents of the Alhambra during its long history. Mohammed ben Al-Hamar made it the royal residence in 1238 which marked its most glorious period.

In later times after the catholic conquests had ousted the Muslims, King Charles V ordered the demolition of part of the complex t0 make way for a new palace. They in turn abandoned the palace for good in the 18th Century with part of the complex being blown up during the French domination.

It was not until the 19th that the restoration of the Alhambra began with its remarkable results culminating in what we see today. It is quite incredible that during the 18th Century when the palace was abandoned the whole complex was a free for all with locals and travellers, beggars and thieves lived and slept in and around the palace area , amazing to think in that time how so much of the Alhambras treasures actually survived . One has to wonder though how much of its treasures and other priceless artifacts where removed and taken away to far of lands.

One of the most celebrated portions of the palace is undoubtedly the "Lions Courtyard" a series of courtyards surrounded by rooms which present a varied repertoire of Moorish arched, columnar, and domical forms. The vast amount and intricacy of carved inscriptions on walls and ceilings are quite breathtaking. Visitors over the centuries has been captivated by the special combination of the slender columnar arcades, fountains, and light-reflecting water basins found in those courtyards.

Usefull Links for the Alhambra Palace: Flickr for lots of great photos, and good web site located at http://www.alhambradegranada.org/

The LIONS COURTYARD

" If you see only one city in Spain it should be GRANADA . For here, extraordinarily well preserved and in a tremendous natural setting, stands the Alhambra - the most exciting, sensual and romantic of all European monuments. It was the palace-fortress of the Nasrid sultans, rulers of the last Spanish Moorish kingdom, and in its construction Moorish art reached a spectacular and serene climax. But the building seems to go further than this, revealing something of the whole brilliance and spirit of Moorish life and culture. There's a haunting passage in Jan Morris's book, Spain , which the palace embodies: "Life itself, which was seen elsewhere in Europe as a kind of probationary preparation for death, was interpreted [by the Moors] as something glorious in itself, to be ennobled by learning and enlivened by every kind of pleasure."

Cheese from Spain

Friday, May 23, 2008

Spain has about 100 different varieties of Cheese. Every region has its own specialty, covering a full range of cheese types, from fresh to cured, to fermented and blue-veined. One essential characteristic is the type of milk used in the production. Depending on the area, time of the year, climate, or tradition, cheeses are made of cows', sheep's, goats' milk, or of a mixture of two or all three types of milk.

In general cow's milk cheeses are found in the north, along the Cantabric coast, from Galicia to the Basque Country, and along the northern Cantabric Mountain Range and the Pyrenees. Sheep's milk cheeses are found inland, from the north, in Cantabria and the Basque Country, down to the flats of Castilla-León, Castilla La Mancha, Aragón and Extremadura. And finally goat's milk cheeses are found mostly along the regions of the Mediterranean coast, from Cataluña to Andalusia, as well as in Extremadura. In the islands, both Canary Islands as well as the Balearic, you will find mostly goat milk cheese, although also some cow milk ones, as well as mixed milk cheeses. Mixed milk cheeses are produced across the whole geography, with the predominant milk of each area being more used in the mixes.

Quality cheese production is taken seriously and there are currently 13 cheeses with Denominations of Origin in Spain. Spanish eat cheese every day, whether it is by itself, or with bread, as a tapa, or as a dessert. Because of the variations in climate and geography, as well as culture, each region of Spain produces several varieties of cheese. Each cheese has its own unique characteristics that affect the finished product, such as the type of milk (sheep, goat, cow or a mixture), the production process, the history or traditions and the aging or curing process.

Cheese flavors are usually classified as light, medium and strong. Their classification depends on both the type of milk and breed of animal as well as on the curing or aging process. Strong and flavored cheeses are usually made from sheep milk or a mix, and typically have a longer curing process.

MACHEGOThe Manchego Cheese Council . This is Spain's best-known ewe's-milk cheese and indeed is one of my personal favorites, although for me it has to be well cured , the stronger the taste the better.

It is named for the province where it is made-La Mancha, home of Don Quixote. However, it is not as flamboyant as the old windmill fighter. It remains relatively sweet and mild at any age with a touch of salty nuts. Manchego was originally made to barter at livestock markets and it provided durable food for the shepherds.

The History of Broome's Street Names: "Cable Beach Road"

cable beachCable Beach is named after the telegraph cable that came ashore on the beach from Banjowangie in Java. The original cable laid by the British Eastern Telegraph Company went to Darwin but it was laid on a volcanic seabed and suffered so many breaks, that it was decided to establish another station at Broome as a safety net, when the Darwin link broke.

The submarine cable was finished in 1889 and with it came "Cable House". By 1912 the cable had been transferred to Cottesloe (WA) and Cable House became the Broome Courthouse in 1921 and is still a functioning Courthouse to this day, and the site of the well known Saturday Courhouse Markets.

Ecological Systems Theory

Tuesday, May 20, 2008
Ecological Systems Theory, also called "Development in Context" or "Human Ecology" theory, specifies four types of nested environmental systems, with bi-directional influences within and between the systems. The theory was developed by Urie Bronfenbrenner, generally regarded as one of the world's leading scholars in the field of developmental psychology. Later a fifth system was added:

* Microsystem: Immediate environments (family, school, peer group, neighborhood, and childcare environments)
* Mesosystem: A system comprised of connections between immediate environments (i.e., a child’s home and school)
* Exosystem: External environmental settings which only indirectly affect development (such as parent's workplace)
* Macrosystem: The larger cultural context (Eastern vs. Western culture, national economy, political culture, subculture)
* Chronosystem: The patterning of environmental events and transitions over the course of life.

The person's own biology may be considered part of the microsystem; thus the theory has recently sometimes been called "Bio-Ecological Systems Theory." Each system contains roles, norms, and rules that can powerfully shape development.

Krabi

Krabi is a southern province on Thailand's Andaman seaboard with perhaps the country's oldest history of continued settlement. After dating stone tools, ancient colored pictures, heads, pottery and skeletal remains found in the province's many cliffs a caves, it is thought that Krabi has been home to homo sapiens since the period 25,000-35,000 B.C. In recorded times it was called the 'Ban Thai Samor', and was one of twelve towns that used, before people were widely literate, the monkey for their standard. At that time, c.1200 A.D.,Krabi was tributary to the Kingdom of Ligor, a city on the Kra Peninsula's east coast better known today as Nakorn Sri Thammarat. At the start of the Rattanakosin period, about 200 years ago, when the capital was finally settled at Bangkok, an elephant kraal was established in Krabi by order of Jao Praya Nakorn(Noy),the Rajah of Nakorn Sri Thammarat, which was by then a part of the Thai Kingdom. He sent his vizier, the Pra Palad to oversee this task, which was to ensure a regular supply of elephants for the larger town, So many emigrated in the steps of the PRA Palad that soon Krabi had a large4 community in three different boroughs:Pakasai, Klong Pon,and Pak Lao. In 1872,King Chulalongkorn graciously elevated these to town status, called Krabi, a ward that preserves in its meaning the monkey symbolism of the old standard. The town's first governor was Luang Tehp Sena, though it continued a while as a dependency of Nakorn Sri Thammarat, This was changed in 1875, when Krabi was raised to a fourth level town in the old system of Thai government in Bangkok, and Krabi's history as a unique entity, separate from the other provinces, had begun.

During the present reign, the corps of civil servants, the merchants, and the population generally of Krabi and nearby provinces have together organized construction of a royal residence at Laem Hahng Nak Cape for presentation to Her Majesty the Queen. This lies thirty kilometers to the west of Krabi Town on the Andaman coast.

Present Day Government

Krabi is divided into eight districts: Muang(Krabi Town),Kao Panom, Klong Tom,Plai Praya,Koh Lanta,Ao Luk,Lam Tap,and Neua Klong.

Size, Location, and Boundaries

Krabi is on the Andaman Sea coast west Thailand, between 7'30" and 8'30" north latitude, and 98'30" and 99'30" west longitude, Total area is 4,709 square kilometers bounded thus:

On the North: Lie Phang-nga and Suratthani Provinces .
On the South: Lie Trang Province and the Andaman Sea
On the East : Lie Trang and Nikon Sri Thammarat Provinces
On the West: Lie Phang-nga Province and the Andaman Sea

Population

Krabi's estimated population,as of 30 July 1998,was 368,249.

Geography

Krabi's mountainous physical geography is broken by highlands and plains on the mainland; the provincial administration also covers more than 130 islands big and small in the Andaman. Natural forest cover is chiefly mangrove and Cassia trees. Krabi's sandy clay soil conditions are perfect for a variety of agricultural products, including; Rubber trees, palms, oranges, coconuts, and coffee The Krabi River flows 5 Kilometers through the city and falls into the Andaman at Tambon Pak Nam. There are other streams as well: The Klong Pakasai; the Klong Krabi Yai; and the Klong Krabi Noy; these have their source in the province' shighest range of mountains, the Kao Panom Benja.

Climate

Friday, May 16, 2008

Ranthambore is known for it's tiger sightings and for the ones who are looking for an audience with the king of the jungle, the Ranthambore National Park is a great weekend getaway, about 140 km from Jaipur.

Ranthambore is well connected both by rail and road and for those wanting a jungle holiday, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Ranthambore is the place to be.

The Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is probably one of the only sanctuaries in the country where one can sight a tiger up close.

''Yes I saw a tiger. First we saw it walking along the road and then by a tree watching the deer as they were coming close,'' said one of the visitor to Ranthambore.

''I gather about 35 tigers here and we were just lucky, it was so close to the lorry that I am glad it had it's breakfast,'' said another visitor.

Safaris at the break of dawn, and a drive through the jungle at dusk are among few exciting Ranthanbore offers.

Between an open gypsy and canters, people vacationing in a large group can pick up their mode of travel.

Most of the routes for tourists run alongside the tigers favourite water holing, making it a great place to sight the big cats.

In the past two years, there has been a baby boom in Ranthambore. They have had 13 new cubs and a visit to this place can get a glimpse of the king of the jungle.

And to take back memories of these majestic animals, Ranthambore also offers a variety of tiger mementos.

The Ranthambore tiger sketches, mostly done in charcoal, are quite famous. T-shirts and souvenirs all add to make an interesting collection of tigeria.

There are hotels to suit everyone's budget in Ranthambore, from luxury five star hotels to those which are light on the pocket but heritage properties can also add a touch of history and romance to the jungle adventure.

The best time to visit Ranthambore is during winter but it is open for guests now too, except between July and September, the three months when it's shut during the monsoons.

Evolutionary robotics

Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Evolutionary Robotics (ER) is a methodology that uses evolutionary computation to develop controllers for autonomous robots. Algorithms in ER frequently operate on populations of candidate controllers, initially selected from some distribution. This population is then repeatedly modified according to a fitness function. In the case of genetic algorithms (or "GAs"), a common method in evolutionary computation, the population of candidate controllers is repeatedly grown according to crossover, mutation and other GA operators and then culled according to the fitness function. The candidate controllers used in ER applications may be drawn from some subset of the set of artificial neural networks, although some applications (including SAMUEL, developed at the Naval Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence) use collections of "IF THEN ELSE" rules as the constituent parts of an individual controller. It is theoretically possible to use any set of symbolic formulations of a control laws (sometimes called a policies in the machine learning community) as the space of possible candidate controllers. It is worth noting that artificial neural networks can also be used for robot learning outside of the context of evolutionary robotics. In particular, other forms of reinforcement learning can be used for learning robot controllers.

Containerization

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Although having its origins in the late 1780s or earlier, the global standardisation of containers and container handling equipment was one of the important innovations in 20th century logistics.

By the 1830s, railroads on several continents were carrying containers that could be transferred to trucks or ships, but these containers were invariably small by today's standards. Originally used for shipping coal on and off barges, 'loose boxes' were used to containerize coal from the late 1780s, on places like the Bridgewater Canal. By the 1840's, iron boxes were in use as well as wooden ones. The early 1900s saw the adoption of closed container boxes designed for movement between road and rail.

We strongly recommend that if possible you book your vacation around these months and try to make it a point to get a glimpse of these spectacular local celbrations.

Vacation Spot

The city of Sliema began rapidly developing in the 19th century and later it became a popular summer resort for wealthier Maltese citizens. Villas and town houses started to be developed in front of sea in the quiet and orderly streets. The 3 kilometer sea promenade and belvedere started to attract the first tourists and many started to look for places where to spend their vacation and many hotels emerged as a result.
