Football is the most popular sport in Spain and it’s easy to understand why. Not only is it fun to play but it is as equally exciting to watch!Modern football was introduced to Spain in the late nineteenth century by a combination of British immigrant workers and visiting sailors. The sport caught on quickly and soon spread far enough away from the docks that the first football club in Spain, Huelva Recreation Club, was formed in 1889.
The first official football match was then played in 1890 at the Tablada Hippodrome between the Huelva Recreation Club and Sevilla FC – a team made up of workers from the Sevilla Water Works and not recognised as an official team. Despite their unofficial status, Sevilla won the match 2 – 0.
In the next few years following these ‘firsts’ many more clubs were formed such as Palamos Foot-Ball club, Catal SC, Foot-Ball Club Barcelona and the notable Madrid Football Club, known today as Real Madrid. Real Madrid is one of the most popular teams in the world today and the Spanish team known for recruiting British footballer, David Beckham.
From this start in the late nineteenth century football bloomed in Spain and in 1920 the Spanish National football team participated at the Olympic Games in Belgium for the first time and walked away with the silver medal.
Since then, the sport has grown in popularity year after year and some of the world’s best known football stars have been recruited by the brilliant Spanish football league.
