Driving eyesight requirements

Letting the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) know about eyesight conditions

When applying for your driving licence from the DVLA you should let them know if you have:

  • any visual condition which affects both eyes (not including short or long sight or colour blindness)
  • any visual condition which affects your sight (not including short or long sight or colour blindness) eg if you have sight in one eye only

If you have had sight correction surgery you should declare this when you apply for your provisional licence.

Eyesight requirements for the practical driving test

Before the practical driving test, your driving examiner will ask you to read the number plate on a stationary vehicle.

The distance requirement for the eyesight test using old style number plates is 20.5 metres or 20 metres if the new-style number plate is used. New-style number plates are easily identifiable starting with two letters eg AB 51 ABC.

If you can't speak English or have difficulty reading, you may copy down what you see.

You can’t read the first number plate

If you can't read the first number plate correctly, you'll be asked to read a second number plate, if you can't read this number plate correctly, you'll be allowed to walk forward until you're just over the appropriate distance away.

If you still can't read the number plate correctly, the examiner will ask you to read a third number plate and will measure the precise distance from this number plate. The distance will be 20.5 metres if you're asked to read an old-style number plate and 20 metres if you're asked to read a new-style number plate.

You can’t read the third number plate

If you can't read the third number plate correctly, and the examiner is satisfied that you don't meet the required eyesight standard, you'll fail the driving test, and the practical test will not continue.

This test failure will be marked on the driving test report form (DL25) with a mark in the 'Item 1' box. Your interpretation of the number plate along with the correct one will be written on the back of the form along with the measured distance.

Wearing glasses/corrective lenses to pass the eyesight test

If you can only read a number plate using glasses/corrective lenses for the eyesight test, the law requires you wear them whenever you are driving and throughout your test. You're not allowed to remove your glasses/corrective lenses when carrying out test manoeuvres (reversing etc).

If you used your glasses/corrective lenses to read the number plate and take off/out your glasses/corrective lenses during the practical test, your examiner will remind you the law requires you to wear them; if you refuse to wear them, the test will not continue.

If you have broken, forgotten or brought the wrong glasses, you should tell your examiner at the start of the test. If you don't tell the examiner and attempt and fail the eyesight test, your test will be recorded as a failure and the remainder of the test will not go ahead.

Failing the eyesight test

Should you fail the eyesight requirement; the examiner will ask you to sign a form DL.77 –which acknowledges you were unable to comply with the eyesight requirements. The examiner (using form DL.77 form) will notify the DVLA that you did not meet the eyesight requirements and your licence will be revoked.

To reapply for your licence, send to DVLA an ‘Application for a Driving Licence’ (D1), available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office® branches. You can also download and complete the medical questionnaire V1 and return it with your D1 form.

When your application arrives at DVLA they’ll ask the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to conduct a separate eyesight test for you at a test centre. If you’re successful you’ll still have to pass the DSA standard eyesight test at your next practical driving test.

When One Gives All A Bad Name....

If there's one thing that gets on my last nerve it's sexism, specifically, when men happen to believe that women are inferior. I think that after we were given the vote and the fact that there are millions of high powered career woman that juggle motherhood, careers and still find time to be a dedicated gym buddy out there, it's pretty much been proven to be incorrect and a theory that originates from the stone age.

I was recently told by a good friend of mine that she encountered the worst kind of sexists. Two men, who shall not be named, thought that it was extremely funny that a woman run was running for president, the woman in question was Hillary Clinton at the time (in case you live under a rock), needless to say my friend was horrified and because of the circumstances had to bite her tongue.....till it bled.....

If I had been there I can easily say that the outcome of that conversation would have been a little different. It started to make me wonder why men still hold on to these ancient views of what women are like? The women I know, the women in my life, are intelligent, beautiful and strong and have admittedly have had to settle because very few men can handle the whole package. So is it because we are becoming a threat, that men feel the need to degrade us? Is it because of the insecurities of men that cannot handle a partner who is their equal or maybe even a little higher on the scale then they are?

I'm being a little unfair, I know, not all men are sexist pigs, not all men are intimidated by a strong, independent woman, but I would put my last penny on the fact that a vast majority of men are. So after a my thoughts had died down and I had rationalized the explanation in my head, I came across a story.... Yes, I come across many stories, stories that shock me, anger me, make me feel a little inspired (those are few and far between) but this one, it was different. It made me stop and think and come up with alternative conclusion to my original one.

It may seem simple, but if there's one thing I've realized in this life, some of the simplest answers, the answers that are staring us right in the face, are the ones that take us a while to grasp. A woman in America put an ad on that ridiculous Craigslist and offered herself to any man willing to give her tickets to the World Series. The penny dropped.....(sound of glass shattering)It's these kind of women that give the rest of us a bad name. She claims she didn't specifically offer sex she was "hoping to bat my eyelashes and score free tickets", you are an insult to your own gender! The fact that she believes that that is a better explanation shows me that she is the reason so many men out there still think the way they do about women. All I can do is shake my head in shame.

Turbocharging and Supercharging

Engine with Turbocharger
Turbochargers and superchargers are fans that force compressed air into an engine’s cylinders. A turbocharger fan is powered by exhaust from the engine, while a supercharger fan is powered by the engine itself.

Both technologies allow more compressed air and fuel to be injected into the cylinders, generating extra power from each explosion. A turbocharged or supercharged engine produces more power than the same engine without the charging, allowing manufacturers to user smaller engines without sacrificing performance.

Mob Mentality

There are some situations in life you cannot begin to understand, I'm speaking to the people that use their moral compass to guide them through the obstacle course of life. A young girl of 15 was gang raped at a school in California. This may seem like the norm, how many times have we heard about gang rapes? Horrific but news we've heard time and time again what makes this story different and caused a media frenzy is that it was at a Homecoming Dance, outside the hall, for everyone to see and can you guess what people did? I'm not talking about normal, sane human beings, I'm talking about sick and twisted teenagers that either stared, laughed, took photos or participated.

It went on for two hours, with a transfixed audience, mob mentality at its very best. Reveling in a poor girls misery and fear. I'm a parent and when I say that this story shocks me to my core, that would be an understatement. What the hell are parents teaching their kids? Why are atrocities like this happening in "civil" society? Inst this behavior reminiscent of the dark ages, seems we are heading backwards and at an alarming rate.

5 boys, I call them boys because real men don't rape, have been arrested and I think that every student that witnessed that event and did nothing should be held accountable like the rapists. I actually think it's worse when a person does nothing and let's something so horrific take place. Lock them all up and throw away the key and while you're at it, lock their parents up to. People like that don't deserve to be walking around free, cage them like the animals they are. And to that poor girl, my thoughts go out to you in this difficult time. I'm sorry.....

Astana is the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan since some years ago, and lots of modern buildings (some of them are weird, but most of them are really beautiful and functional), are being built in the city. Aliphatic Polyisocyanate Paints In Automotive

Two-component, polyurethane paints containing aliphatic isocyanates are widely used in autobody spray painting. Such isocyanates can cause asthma, and skin exposure may be an important route of sensitization and may contribute to the development of isocyanate asthma. Autobody workers are frequently in contact with recently painted, dried auto parts. It is not known how fast the newly painted car surfaces are fully cured, that is, for how long unbound, isocyanate species remain on painted surfaces after initial drying. To address this question, scrap sections of auto bodies were painted and dried by autobody shop painters following regular practice. Routinely used paints were sprayed 23 different times on the parts. Drying was accomplished by baking the part in a paint spray booth by heating it with a heat lamp or air drying in the shop.

The 23 sprayed surfaces were sampled at regular time intervals after drying to determine the presence of free NCO groups using the semiquantitative SWYPE technique. Quantitative isocyanate analysis was also performed on two sprayed parts using NIOSH method 5525. Geometric mean curing time of 23 painted surfaces was 56.4 hr (range: 0.8 hrs to 32 days). Unbound isocyanate species of similar composition to the original bulk material remained present on the majority of sampled painted surfaces for up to 120 hours for typical paint formulations and for 1 month for others.

The actual curing of polyurethane paints in autobody refinishing can be a slow process. Unbound isocyanates may remain on the surface of painted car parts for prolonged periods (days to weeks) after dried. Such surfaces are an under-recognized potential source of skin exposure to autobody workers.

The Fight Against Social Networking....

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter....If I were more technologically and digitally inclined I could name a few more, but my point is that social networking is the new life, not real, not fake, somewhere in between. Human beings don't need human interaction anymore when they can spend hours and lifetimes in front of a computer screen promoting their super cool alter ego. If you can't detect the tone of sarcasm I have so blatantly put in that line, I consider you a lost cause, trapped in a digital world of LOL's and smiley faces.

Someone actually said to me once "TMI!", excuse me? After a very puzzled face and many a web savvy stare, I was told that it means Too Much Information. Since when did it become acceptable to communicate to people in web language? Here's one for you....WTF. No explanation needed, if you're reading this blog, I'm 99 percent sure you know your way around the world of the internet and the cultures and rules that follow closely behind it.

A friend of mine passed away, not so long ago, friend is maybe a little strong, but he was a friend on Facebook, that counts right? Sarcasm, the only tool I love and one that's slated as the lowest form of wit. Go figure. So he dies, people are mourning, funeral preparations are under way and one of the many village idiots that roam our real planet (earth by the way), says in a very sad and withdrawn tone "What should we do about his facebook account?" to my horror another responded "Don't worry (insert name-please feel free to use any name you can think-I can think of a few)Facebook memorializes accounts of deceased people, his parents just need to get hold of Facebook and his account will be left open for comments from friends...." It was at this stage that I blanked out, I think it was my brain's way of protecting itself from mindless facebook drones.

I have a facebook account, I'll be honest but I can assure you that when I die, the last thing I want is a page memorializing me, I'm all for shrines but I'm a little too modest for that. Just send me a virtual high five and press delete and I'll make my way along the digital river Styx to the recycle bin. I also don't feel the need to spend my time, tweeting, the thought of explaining to a person who actively uses their mind that I'm tweeting makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

So why you wonder, do I even have a facebook account if I am so against the new order? Ill tell you, morbid fascination, Like many of you I've been sucked into the vortex of people's lives, a virtual voyeur. Does it make me proud to say that? Of course not, but it's the truth, the real truth, not something fabricated for more friend invites. Like an addict, I too will have to endure cold turkey, simply to enjoy the forgotten pastime of coffee and a chat, face to face, the innocent touch of hands, the pat on a shoulder, instead of the cold, hard keys of a keyboard. The world is outside, dare you to shut down?

Consumer Assistance Program Fact Sheet

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

The Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) provides financial assistance for qualified consumers whose vehicles fail their biennial (every-other-year) Smog Check. The statutory authority for CAP is found in the Health and Safety Code and is implemented through regulations adopted by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). Participation in CAP is limited to available funds.

How do I qualify for CAP?

CAP offers two options for consumers whose vehicles fail their biennial Smog Check:

  • Repair Assistance: Qualified consumers can receive financial assistance toward emissions-related repairs to help their vehicles pass their Smog Check inspection. Approved applicants must take their vehicles to a Gold Shield repair station for repairs. Gold Shield stations are licensed Smog Check facilities that are independently owned and under contract with the State of California. There are two ways to qualify for repair assistance.
    • Income Eligible - Qualified consumers whose household incomes meet the income guidelines (derived from the federal poverty guidelines) can receive financial assistance toward emissions-related repairs. A copayment is required and will be applied toward diagnosis and emission-related repairs. The CAP application includes an income eligibility table to help consumers determine if they meet the income requirements.
    • Directed Vehicle Eligible - Certain vehicles are directed to Test-Only or Gold Shield stations for their initial smog tests. If your Department of Motor Vehicles registration notice requires a test at a Test-Only or Gold Shield station, and your vehicle fails, you may qualify for financial assistance toward emissions-related repairs at a Gold Shield repair station. Test-Only stations cannot perform repairs. A copayment is required and will be applied toward diagnosis and emissions-related repairs.
  • Vehicle Retirement: Eligible consumers can receive payment to retire their high-polluting vehicle. There are no income or Directed Vehicle eligibility requirements. Approved applicants must take their vehicle to an authorized dismantler. The vehicle must pass a visual and operational inspection before it is retired.

How do I apply?

You must first submit an application. Do not have any repairs done to your vehicle until you are notified that your application has been approved. If you applied for repair assistance, you will then receive an approval letter and a list of Gold Shield stations. If you applied for vehicle retirement, you will receive an approval letter and a list of contracted dismantlers.

Dwarka is known as one of the seven most ancient cities in India. Dwarka is also one of the main centers of the Krishna legend. The origin of Dwarka is related to Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is believed that after killing the evil Kansa adopted the city of Dwarka and he gave up his home at Mathura.

Dwarka is home of attractions worth visiting. These popular tourist attractions in Dwarka comprised of architectural wonders, interesting origin and history.

Dwarka Lighthouse has magnificent architectural works. It has also rich checkered history to share with to its visitors.

Its history goes back to the 19th century when a port was constructed at Rupeen Creek. The history of this famous structure started in the early 19th century when a port was built at Rupen creek. There is a flag posted here with a lamp at the top to work similarly to a lighthouse.

The square tower made of stone was constructed at the present site in the year 1866. This tower stands 18 meters high. The lamp was made of oil wick and installed afterwards at the tower of this lighthouse.
When Sir Richard Temple, Governor of Bombay visited Dwarka in November 29, 1877 via sea route took chance to visit Dwarka Lighthouse. The governor then found out that the light was very insufficient. It was replaced with a better form of light in 1881. This equipment was imported from M/s. Chance Bros of England. In 1900 this Lighthouse had undergone also minor modifications.

Further more, D. Alen Stevenson, LH specialist also visited the lighthouse in February of 1927. Stevenson then appreciated the good maintenance of this lighthouse. The new square masonry Tower, 43 meter tall was built from Birmingham's Stone Chance was installed over the tower between the year1960-62. The storm warning signal mast which was the latest equipment at that time was also installed at the station of the lighthouse.

July 15, 1962 was the date when Raj Bahadur, then Minister for Transport, Government of India, inaugurated the new lighthouse. It was constructed with RCC Baffle wall with vibrations and fog signals technology. These new equipments were supplied by M/s BBT of Paris, and were commissioned in April of 1964. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga has interesting legend. There was a devotee of the temple, named Supriya who was attacked by a demon called Daaruka. Daaruka imprisoned the devotee and several others in his Daarukaavana. Lord Shiva appeared at the temple in the form of Jyotirlinga. Lord Shiva freed the prisoners and killed Daaruka.

The place took its name from the demon Daruka. According to legend, before Daaruka's death, this demon appealed to the god that the place be named after him, now known as Nagnath.

This temple houses the idol of Shivalinga that faces towards the south. The idol of Gomugam housed inside the temple is positioned on the east portion. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga also houses the Giant statue of Lord Shiva which allures the devotees. This temple during the eve of Shivaratri turns to a place of festivities amidst a large number of devotees.

The Real Remote Control Car

Monday, October 26, 2009
Courtesy of the Telegraph.co.uk:

An iPhone app that allows motorists to drive a car using their mobile phone has been developed by German researchers. The iDriver app converts the iPhone into a the real-life equivalent of a video game controller, capable of directing the progress of a two ton minivan.

The app has separate buttons for accelerate and brake, along with a steering wheel that exploits the iPhone's motion-sensitive capabilities.

Its instructions are sent to the specially-rigged car over Wi-Fi, with the "driver" able to navigate from a distance with the help of live video stream from a camera on the roof.

The app, which is not yet commercially available, is the brainchild of researchers from the artificial intelligence team at the Free University of Berlin.

In test drives on a reassuringly deserted runway at the city's Tempelhof Airport, the "Spirit of Berlin" car was filmed doing tight turns at the behest of an iPhone-wielding researcher standing several feet away.

Close-up footage shows the car's steering wheel touring as the driver rotates the phone.

The app was created by the Appirion firm, which specialises in software for mobile phones.

While iDriver is believed to be the first car controller devised for the iPhone, it follows a spate of technological advances aimed at creating "autonomous vehicles" capable of driving themselves and reacting to their surroundings.
