Travel destinations for WOMEN travellers

Thursday, April 29, 2010

An unusual holiday is the new equivalent of an 'It' bag - it holds the promise of being a sure-shot conversation starter. 'What will you do this summer?' takes on a whole new meaning this season.

WOMEN travellers are increasingly a target for the tourism industry. But as with anything to do with women, experts are finding that keeping up with them is a tough job.

What used to be considered chic for the Indian female traveller - spending the summer shopping at Harrods in London, or sipping on a capuccino on the Avenue des Champs Elysees in Paris - is now considered passé and is no longer catching the Indian woman's fancy.

While adventure sports are also a growing fad among women of late, there is also an increasing tribe of women who are indulging in the ultimate fashion snobbery: planning a holiday that is unusual. In the fashionista's vocabulary, it is the equivalent of the It bag - when you walk into a party, what you did/will do this summer should be a conversation starter.

So for many, summer travel now means going off the social radar, and the tour operator’s map, and designing a trip that no one else is taking. After all, who wants to hang out at a fancy nightclub in New York full of the same folk spotted at Delhi’s chic watering holes, when one can test drive a Porsche through sand dunes at an exclusive 'by invitation only' event?

According to Mohit Ahluwalia, Director of SKH Global Travels, the Indian woman is becoming more selective than ever. He says: "Having already travelled extensively before, she wants a new experience. She is more cultured and sophisticated than ever before and her choice of itinerary show that."

While one of this summer's most eagerly anticipated movies, Sex in the City 2, shows the four granddames of the New York social scene (Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda) jet off to Morocco for an exotic girly getaway, it all seems a little 'been there, done that.' Especially since they still have each other as security blankets.

Nowadays a woman wants to go on a one of a kind holiday, and she is not afraid to go on her own. While Europe and the Far East are still popular destinations, according to Gaurav Dogra, Chairman of Plan Your Holiday, travellers are not really interested in going there for sightseeing.

Rather tailor-made trips of spa holidays, adventure tours of New Zealand or Whisky tours of Scotland are the new favourites for the Indian traveller.

Seville Here We Come

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

It's the cultural, financial and arty mecca of Spain, so if you want to visit a true Spanish city, Seville would be a great choice.

Located on the plain of the second largest river in Spain, Seville is a southern city renowned for vibrant festivities, intimidating architecture and true Spanish culture. What else would you expect from a city whose inhabitants are collectively known as Sevillanos? Not only is Seville one of Spains major cities, it's also the capital of the Andalusia region of the country. In my opinion, the city center is one of the best places to be in the city, the area is well pedestrianised as any true Spanish city should be and there are many notable attractions that are all just a short walk away. When you look around at the impressive cathedrals and beautifully built museums it's hard to believe that this city is over 2000 years old but it's true. A popular past time in Seville is to hang out in one of the many scenic parks around the city area, an activity perfectly suited to the hot Mediterranean climate in this part of Spain.

This is just a small taste of what awaits visitors to Seville and if you enjoy a good night out on the town, then you'll be in your element in a city with a nightlife that has been described in the past as intense!

Heading to warmer weather? Hopefully ...

Tuesday, March 2, 2010
The long winter in the Highlands of Scotland may not be quite over yet, but for me it will be so on Thursday, when I start the journey south to my home in Spain for a few months. The first part of the trip will take me beyond the 'snow fields' of the Grampians (with a bit of luck) and on down to the southern Lake District, where I will be spending a night on my way to Portsmouth to catch the

EPA Kit Car Policy

Thursday, October 1, 2009

The following represents a clarification of EPA's policy concerning the regulation of imported and domestically produced kit cars and kit car packages. Kit vehicles are understood by EPA to typically involve new bodies, used drivetrains and new or used chassis. Used components may or may not be refurbished. This policy applies to kits or assembled kit cars only. This policy does not apply to regular production vehicles offered for importation into or produced in the United States.

  1. Fully-assembled kit cars are "motor vehicles" under the Clean Air Act. Complete kit car packages are also "motor vehicles" under the Clean Air Act. These are packages which contain all of the major components needed for assembly (i.e., body, chassis, engine and transmission). As "motor vehicles" they are subject to all applicable emission regulations. If an assembled kit car or complete kit car package is offered for importation and the kit is not covered by an EPA certificate of conformity issued to an original equipment manufacturer, an EPA Form No. 3520-1 must be filed at the port of entry and the vehicle must be imported by an Independent Commercial Importer (ICI) eligible to import such vehicles or kits. The ICI then must ensure that the vehicle or kit complies with all applicable emission requirements.
  2. An assembled kit car or complete kit car package which meets the following guidelines will be considered to be a rebuilt vehicle of a previously certified configuration and will be considered to be covered by that configuration's original EPA certificate of conformity.
    1. The components of the drivetrain (engine, transmission, differential) must be exclusively or substantially used and/or rebuilt. Regardless of the combination of new and used components, the engine must be used or used and rebuilt. The engine block and cylinder head(s) must be used, other components of the engine may be new. "Used" means the component has been in a vehicle that has been titled to an ultimate purchaser. A rebuilt component is defined as a used component which has been refurbished with new or other used parts.
    2. All emission-related components and settings must conform in all material respects to those of one previously certified configuration. Therefore, all part numbers for the emission-related components of a fully assembled kit vehicle or complete kit car package must match or be traceable to the numbers specified in the application for certification of a previously certified configuration.
    3. Consistent with EPA Advisory Circular (AC) 64, which deals with modifications performed before sale to the ultimate purchaser, the vehicle weight of the kit configuration can be no more than 500 pounds greater than the weight of the originally certified configuration.
    4. All catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, and charcoal canisters must be new, original equipment parts.
    5. Kit vehicles must: (1) have the same transmission configuration (i.e., manual, automatic, semi-automatic, number of forward gears, and shift calibration) as the originally certified configuration; and (2) consistent with AC 17F, have an N/V ratio (speed of vehicle in miles per hour/speed of engine in revolutions per minute) which matches the N/V ratio of the originally certified configuration within three (3) percent in every gear.*
      • *The Agency would consider minor variations to these limitations upon an appropriate demonstration that the altered configuration will meet Federal emission requirements.
    6. Each vehicle and its accompanying documentation must be clearly labeled as to the make, model year, engine family, subfamily, and tune-up specifications represented by the originally certified vehicle.
    7. If the originally certified configuration required unleaded fuel, then the vehicles must have fuel filler neck restrictors and unleaded fuel labels which meet the requirements of 40 CFR 80.24.
  3. The production, sale and importation of automotive bodies alone (i.e., no chassis, engine or transmission) are not regulated by EPA since such units are not considered "motor vehicles" under the Clean Air Act. EPA form 3520-1 is not required for imported automotive bodies. A motor vehicle from which the engine has been removed is still a motor vehicle and is not considered a body.
  4. The production, sale and importation of vehicle parts (engines, transmissions, chassis, vehicle bodies, etc.) are not regulated by EPA because parts are not considered motor vehicles under the Clean Air Act. However if the parts constitute a disassembled vehicle or an approximate disassembled vehicle, the combination is considered a motor vehicle under the Clean Air Act. Any attempt to use this policy to circumvent the Clean Air Act or the Imports regulations will be considered a violation of the Clean Air Act and will be strictly enforced. An example of such circumvention is:
    • A kit car maker who also provides the engine and transmission before or after production/importation of the body/chassis.
  5. "Motor vehicles" must comply with the Clean Air Act and may not be disassembled nor purchased in a disassembled form for the purposes of evading the Clean Air Act or the Imports regulations. In these situations the kit car body/chassis combination must be certified by the manufacturer, must be in a configuration which was previously certified by EPA subject to the guidelines discussed at "2" above or, in the case of an importation, an EPA form 3520-1 must be filed at the port of entry and the vehicle imported by an eligible ICI who must ensure that the kit car body/chassis complies with all applicable emission requirements. At the present time, there are no ICIs eligible to import kit cars.
  6. Except with regard to kit vehicles meeting the guidelines at "2" above; an individual or firm that assembles kits for hire or resale, that produces assembled kit cars for resale or that produces complete kit car packages for resale will be considered to be a manufacturer of new motor vehicles under the Clean Air Act. Such manufacturers and their vehicles are subject to all applicable regulations under the Act including civil penalties of up to $25,000 per vehicle for each new motor vehicle distributed in commerce, sold, offered for sale, or introduced, or delivered for introduction, into commerce, unless such vehicle is covered by a certificate of conformity issued by EPA.

New Zealan - Travel to the lonely planet

Thursday, September 24, 2009
There’s a reason the sun shines on New Zealand before anywhere else - every new day in Aotearoa is something to cherish! Small, remote and thinly populated, yes, but NZ punches well above its weight with its outlandish scenery, fabulous festivals, superb food and wine, and magical outdoor experiences. Equally impressive is NZ’s potent, mainstream Maori culture. This is a country that recognises and celebrates its indigenous people - the world is a kinder, gentler, more respectful place down here! And while the fanfare surrounding the Lord of the Rings trilogy is waning, visiting the real-life Middle-earth still has a geeky allure - LOTR director Peter Jackson's filmmaking prowess still holds Wellington (aka ‘Wellywood’) in its thrall.

In 2007, around 2.2 million overseas visitors tramped, wheeled, wined and dined across the country, up almost 40% from a relatively meagre 1.6 million in 1999. But at what cost? Extra visitors strain the clean, green environment NZ is renowned for, and all this wilderness frenzy is having an impact: the skies above Franz Josef Glacier buzz with droning aeroplanes, tourists still shampoo in creeks, and locals simply avoid entire chunks of NZ because of the tourist hordes. In response, the Department of Conservation (DOC) has implemented a booking system for its Great Walks - there are nine including the Milford Track, Routeburn Track and Abel Tasman Coast Track - to avoid overcrowding and minimise environmental damage. The NZ tourism industry is embracing all things ‘eco’, while regionally, eateries and farmers markets selling local produce present sustainable options. Regardless, hardcore environmentalists claim the industry and government aren’t moving fast enough. Drought and climate change are fanning the flames...

AP7 Cartagena-Vera branded as 'ghost highway'

Saturday, August 22, 2009
(Please see UPDATE at end)Traffic volumes on the Cartagena-Vera extension of the AP7 motorway have fallen far short of expectations during its first two plus years of operation, largely attributed to the fact that for almost the whole of its length it is a toll road (98 of 114 Km length) and exacerbated by the recession which has accelerated the deterioration in usage levels in the last year.A

Tourism Takes a Dive but Tourism Radio punts Self Drive

Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Reports in the weekend papers predict that tourism is suffering in Spain because of the fall of the pound against the euro. The recession seems to be taking on a snowball effect in the UK and its expected to negatively impact British tourism by 25%.

Spain expects to see a half a million tourists less this year in the Costa Blanca area alone. Numbers like that have devastating effects of small tourists towns that rely mostly on a regular influx of tourists.

The exchange rate may vary but one constant remains...people still want to go on holiday. The recession has directed a number of prospective holiday makers to seek out cheaper alternatives and tailor make their holidays to perfectly suit their needs, minus the excess costs.

Hotels are hopeful, airlines are dropping their fares to remain competitive but...competition is tight. Tourism Radio focuses on giving self drive tourists the freedom to travel the way they want to and still experience the country as if their was a local sitting in the car with them telling them about the area they're in and about the landmarks and highlights as their car approaches them. It seems to be the most viable option seeing as though the drive from Britain to Spain is easy and accessible.

One thing is certain...the recession will bring about change. Changes in the way people travel, what destinations are deemed popular and what experiences tourists can now afford. The good news is that with Tourism Radio, a change is still as good as a holiday.

Walk the Talk with Tourism Radio

Friday, January 16, 2009
Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations in the European Union and Tourism Radio has developed another product to accommodate the scores of tourists to the second largest city in Spain. Visitors can now tour the city with the help of Tourism Radio’s MP3 player.

Tourism Radio is the world’s first GPS based radio station and has offices in Australasia, Africa, Europe and the U.S. Initially Tourism Radio was a device that fitted into a hire car and played information to listeners specific to their location. Tourism Radio has now diversified their product range to include an MP3 player that tells visitors about Barcelona.

Tourism Radio Chief Operations Officer Mark Allewell said, “We don’t only talk to tourists, we listen to them. We started getting feedback that visitors now want to get out of their cars for a while and explore the city on foot. We developed the walking tours specifically in response to what tourists want. We want to make sure that when somebody chooses to travel without a conventional guide, they don’t miss out on anything.”

Tourists can now hire the Tourism Radio Creative MP3 players, renowned as one of the most popular and user-friendly players in the world. The extended battery life of 15 hours means that tourists are able to spend more time exploring and less time sticking to a schedule. The MP3 players are pre programmed with audio clips about landmarks and places of interest so that users can discover the city at their leisure, with the help of their own digital “tour guide.”

Tourism Radio MP3 players are currently available in 85% of the 3 to 5 star hotels in Barcelona and audio clips are available in five languages, namely Spanish, English, German, French and Italian. Later this year, Tourism Radio will also be launching the product in Madrid after receiving positive feedback from the Barcelona hotels and visitors to both cities will be able to enjoy the same entertaining and informative content.

Top cruise operators in Barcelona have also expressed an interest in providing an exclusive tour for their passengers with the help of the MP3 players. Users will not only hear about the cities landmarks and highlights, but will receive fail-safe directions on how to get there. CEO of Tourism Radio Jacques Teichmann says, “We’re excited about developing the MP3 player for the cruise operators so that visitors can not only “listen to the city” but they won’t get lost either! It is a service that no other walking tour can guarantee. We’re passionate about our products and the service we offer to tourists, the MP3 player is just another way we are walking our talk…we hope that everyone will join us and take our MP3 players for a walk.”

Ryanair trying to stop web portals selling its flights

Friday, August 15, 2008
Apparently some people (again apparently in Spain, perhaps amongst other locations) buy their flights through web portals which by-pass Ryanair's own website and, Ryanair aleges, seem to charge upto 200 per cent more for the flight than the airline itself. Perhaps this does go on, but I'm not sure why the ultimate user (the passenger) should wish to do this. I expect some passengers do not have
