Dry spell to hit SEA in coming months
Thursday, February 17, 2011
Sin Chew Jit Poh, 18 Feb 2011SINGAPORE, Thursday 17 February 2011 (Bernama) – The Southeast Asian region may expect drier weather during the coming traditional dry season between June and September this year. This is due to the possibility of the prevailing La Nina weakening to neutral conditions in the second half of the year, according to the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) in its
Exceptional waves in Mazarrón - February 2010
Friday, September 3, 2010
I read at the time of the exceptional waves that had occurred in Puerto de Mazarrón on 19th February 2010, but as I wasn't in Spain at the time didn't see them myself. However, I've just found this video-clip on YouTube of the phenomenon; it looks as if it would have been very impressive to see it on the day. I expect there were a few boat-owners who were a bit worried, too!
Going nowhere fast ...
Friday, February 26, 2010
I have hardly been blogging here recently, largely because I simply have not had the time. Personal family matters have been preoccupying me as have preparations for my imminent departure for Spain, not to mention occasional bursts of high activity related to maintaining a community's website in Spain. The fact I am not actually in Spain is irrelevant as one of the wonders of the internet age is
Nairn (Scotland) today - how I wish I was back in the Murcia Region of Spain just now!

The view from my apartment around lunch-time today. The soundtrack in the background by the way is the BBC Scotland lunch-time news on BBC1.Looking out to sea through the blizzard - it looks bleak and wildPanning across from the harbour and the cricket pitch with the A96 and Marine Road just visible in the gloomPanning back from Marine Road to the harbour and sea- definitely a day when it is
Lack of blog entries here of late
Sunday, December 13, 2009
I must apologise for the lack of blog entries here in the last week or so. There have in fact been many topics relating to Spain, directly or tangentially, that I could have covered - but the trouble is that although I have been trying to keep up with some of the news, I have been horrendously busy in the past several weeks putting together a new website for the 'urbanisation' where I have my
Converting different measures of rainfall
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
Here in Spain (and in Europe generally, I think) rainfall is measured in terms of litres per square meter over a given period. The period during which the rainfall is experienced is obviously important, because if 100 litres of rain falls in say, 12 hours, that will be a very different thing than if that same volume of rain falls evenly over a month. The former would be a downpour, the latter a
Parts of Murcia on 'RED ALERT' because of torrential rains
Monday, September 28, 2009
Mostly continuous heavy rain over the past 30 or so hours (expected to continue for a while yet) has caused significant disruption throughout parts of lowland and coastal Murcia region, with the worst affected areas being Cartagena, Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón.On Sunday upto 80 litres of rain per square meter fell in the Campo de Cartagena and there was severe disruption in the local road
Stormy weather for Mazarron/Cartagena areas ...
Monday, August 10, 2009
... forecast for today (Tuesday) and tomorrow. From about 10.00 today until midnight tomorrow there is a risk of strong wind gusts upto (Europa Press) 70 km/hr accompanied by thunder in the Campo de Cartegena and Mazarron areas; a 'yellow alert' has been declared. A similar 'yellow alert' has also been declared because of the risk of stormy coastal conditions (high wind gusts and stormy seas)
The reversal of the natural order of things?
Saturday, May 30, 2009
Is the world turning upside down? Just a few moments ago I took screen-shots from my embedded weather data 'gizmo' which reveal the stark truth - today at 12.58 BST the temperature was 25 degrees Celsius at Inverness airport (about 7 miles from my home in Nairn, Scotland), whereas at 13.00 CEST today the temperature was 22 degrees Celsius at Murcia-St Javier airport, roughly 70Km from my Spanish
Spring forward, fall back
Sunday, October 26, 2008
The subject at issue this morning is: would I already have been awake for over an hour this morning (and it's still not 8am) if it wasn't for the fact that the clocks went back an hour last night? Maybe for you it's different, but for me it's a definite 'no'! So today signals the real beginning of the winter season. It may be lighter this morning at this time than we have grown used to over the
Thunderbolts and lightning - very very frightening me
Thursday, October 9, 2008
There are forecasts of heavy rains and high winds in the Murcia region over the coming days.Rainfall of upto 100 litres per square metre in 12 hours is thought possible as are winds of upto 70 KmH; apparently the meteorological conditions for the next few days are thought to be very similar to those that occurred in 1973 when the River Segura burst its banks.PS/ You may recognise the title of
