Top 10 Places to spend Christmas

Monday, November 30, 2009
1. Las Vegas – Christmas is all about indulgence and treating yourself and your family, and what better place for this than the city of over the top luxury and entertainment that is Las Vegas. There are a number of impressive hotels that go all out for the Christmas and New Year period with some visually stunning decorations, and this time of year you can also get some great bargains as there is heavy competition among hotels to secure Christmas bookings. The Mirage is one of the biggest luxury hotels, and the massive aquarium in the lobby will take your breath away. It is also a casino and has its own shows such as the very popular Cirque du Soleil extravaganza, which you will need to book in advance as it can sell out at peak times.

2. Honolulu, Oahu – tropical beach resorts are always popular at Christmas time and the heart of Hawaii, the island of Oahu, is one of the best mid winter sun destinations, full of warm and welcoming traditional culture and beautiful natural scenery. The famous white tropical beaches of Waikiki are the perfect place to treat your family to a relaxing, memorable Christmas, and Honolulu city spares no expense on the holiday decorations and electric Christmas light parades.

3. Disneyland, Orlando, Florida – perhaps one of the most special places you can take your children for the Christmas break is Disneyland. It really is a magical place, and Christmas is extra special with some fantastic decorations all across the park and its hotels, with an amazing 50,000 lights decorating Sleeping Beauty’s Castle and a 60 foot Christmas tree at the end of Main Street. The rides themselves are also redecorated at Christmas, and kids will love the seasonal changes to the Haunted House, with a whole theme based on Tim Burton’s popular “The Nightmare Before Christmas” film featuring Jack Skelington. There is also an amazing Christmas Fantasy Parade which is unmissable as well as “West Pole” which is set up in Frontierland and features a get away for Santa so that he can unwind before his big day.

4. New York – Christmas in New York is spectacular, with some impressive decorations and fantastic shows and entertainments. A visit to the huge kids toy stores FAO Schwarz and Toys R Us in Times Square are truly magical, as well as the famous Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and the amazing Christmas window displays at Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. New York is very cold at this time of year and there is a good chance of snow falling, which can make getting around a bit awkward but adds to the magical atmosphere.

5. Meran, Southern Tirol Italy – This is one of the most popular skiing destinations in the world and also provides a number of other fantastic activities including hiking tours, mountain biking and the very popular lighted night skiing and sledding. The beautiful old Meran town centre was built in the 13th century and was formerly the capital of the Tirol area and offers some excellent and atmospheric shopping and dining experiences over the Christmas break.

6. Bay of Islands, New Zealand – New Zealand is an amazing country with such a lot to offer, and it is summer here in December so expect barbecues on the beach rather than open fires and eggnog. The Bay of Islands has some of the world’s most outstanding natural scenery with over 150 different tiny islands and secluded beaches, and you can stay in beautiful little secluded villas which look out over the miles of blue ocean. Seaside restaurants in the area provide fantastic Christmas feasts if you don’t feel in the mood to cook for yourself, and you can take memorable Christmas morning cruises out from Russell Harbour to watch wildlife such as dolphins and whales.

7. Edinburgh, Scotland – Christmas is always celebrated in style in Edinburgh, with fantastic firework displays and some great Christmas shopping and dining experiences. The luxurious Caledonian Hilton provides an atmospheric and intimate stay with roaring fireplaces and tasteful decorations, and a trip to the 600 year old St. Giles Cathedral on Christmas Eve to hear the sermon and carol singing is truly special and will get you in the perfect mood for Christmas day.

8. Malmö, Sweden – this beautiful city was built back in the 16th century and has some amazing buildings that look simply magical covered in decorations and a light blanket of snow. Christmas is celebrated on Christmas Eve by most families in Sweden, so make sure that if you want to eat Christmas dinner out you book up in advance on 24th, as most restaurants actually close on Christmas Day. Traditional Swedish Christmas feasts are based on mainly fish dishes, but you will find the odd turkey roast here and there.

9. Mexico City – there is a real party vibe in the capital of Mexico all year long, but things get especially hot at Christmas time, making this one of the best Christmas party towns in the world. Check into the Hotel Habita, which has a wonderful swinging rooftop lounge and lap pool, and is full of experienced party people looking to unwind and have a great time. You can eat a traditional Mexican Christmas meal in the fantastic courtyard at San Ángel Inn, which is a former Carmelite monastery built in 1692, and there is also some excellent gift shopping places in the nearby main square where artists and craftsman display their wares in various shops and stalls.

10. Boston USA – Boston has a real old world feel, with its grand old architecture and cobblestoned streets , and it is a real treat to spend Christmas here browsing through the shops and stalls and relaxing in one of the many coffee houses and cafes. The XV Beacon Hotel is a great place to stay combining vintage detail such as four poster beds with modern amenities (Internet connections and CD players) and it is close to the one of the oldest parks in the USA, Boston Common which looks simply stunning when it snows in mid winter.

Tire Maintenance

There is a close working relationship between your tires and other mechanical systems in your vehicle, such as the wheels, brakes, shock absorbers, steering and suspension systems. To ensure you have a safe, comfortable ride and good tire mileage, click on the areas of interest below.
  • Tire Size
  • Tire Tread
  • Balance & Alignment
  • Rotation
  • Repair

Tire Size

To maintain tire safety, purchase new tires that are the same size as the vehicle's original tires or another size recommended by the manufacturer. Look at the tire information placard, the owner's manual, or the sidewall of the tire you are replacing to find this information. If you have any doubt about the correct size to choose, consult with the tire dealer.

Tire Tread

The tire tread provides the gripping action and traction that prevent your vehicle from slipping or sliding, especially when the road is wet or icy. In general, tires are not safe and should be replaced when the tread is worn down to 1/16 of an inch. Tires have built-in treadwear indicators that let you know when it is time to replace your tires. These indicators are raised sections spaced intermittently in the bottom of the tread grooves. When they appear "even" with the outside of the tread, it is time to replace your tires.

Another method for checking tread depth is to place a penny in the tread with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you are ready for new tires. The tread on this tire covers the top of Lincoln's head, so it's not yet ready for replacement.

Penny in Tire

Balance & Alignment

To avoid vibration or shaking of the vehicle when a tire rotates, the tire must be properly balanced. This balance is achieved by positioning weights on the wheel to counterbalance heavy spots on the wheel-and-tire assembly.

A wheel alignment adjusts the angles of the wheels so that they are positioned correctly relative to the vehicle's frame. This adjustment maximizes the life of your tires and prevents your car from veering to the right or left when driving on a straight, level road.

These adjustments require special equipment and should be performed by a qualified technician.

Rotation

Rotating tires from front to back and from side to side can reduce irregular wear (for vehicles that have tires that are all the same size). Look in your owner's manual for information on how frequently the tires on your vehicle should be rotated and the best pattern for rotation.

Examples of common rotation patterns (for vehicles with tires that are the same type and size):

Tire rotation diagram

Repair

A plug by itself is not an acceptable repair.

The proper repair of a punctured tire requires a plug for the hole and a patch for the area inside the tire that surrounds the puncture hole. The repair material used - for example, a “combination patch and plug” repair - must seal the inner liner and fill the injury to be considered a permanent repair.

Punctures through the tread can be repaired if they are not too large, but punctures to the sidewall should not be repaired.

Tires must be removed from the rim to be properly inspected before being plugged and patched.

A Heavy Issue

Weight has always been one of those touchy subjects that have two extremes and no in between. You either condemn the overweight for being greedy and living unhealthy lifestyles or you are one of those people that feel pity for emotional eaters. I, as always, find myself on the fence. I can understand emotional eating, admittedly I do it all the time (I'm one of the fortunate people who have a fast metabolism), but I can't understand how someone could allow their weight to balloon to an extent that their health would suffer severely? And this brings me to a point that everyone seems to feel strongly about, how far should we go, as a society, to accommodate the obese?

By now, you've seen the picture I've attached, it was taken by a flight attendant appalled at the fact that an obese man had to squeeze himself in one seat and obviously for safety reasons this posed quite a problem. Now some airlines have a policy that state a person that cannot fit in one chair will have to pay the cost for two seats and if the plane is fairly empty they will receive a refund on the extra seat they paid for. If that is not accommodating, I really don't know what is.

After reading the article, I scrolled down the page to find the comments of people who had just read what I read and I was shocked at how expressive some people can be when it comes to their opinions. Needless to say, there wasn't very much room for sympathy or understanding. However, I tend to agree with some of them. I can't for one second, understand what they are going through or how hard it must be to lose weight that can be so easily picked up, but I can say that accommodating the obese is only making it easier. If I were overweight I would want someone to be honest with me, to tell me that it's unhealthy and I need to make some serious life changes.

This applies to the other end of the scale, I think the media perpetuates the lie of perfection if you are skinny to the point of a skeleton. Kate Moss recently said "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels", I can say with one hundred percent certainty that is the biggest load of bullshit I've ever heard and she should be ashamed for even saying that. I think we should be promoting HEALTH, it's not actually an issue about skinny or fat, it's an issue of living a full and happy life. Bombarding our bodies with junk food or forcing ourselves not to eat is a serious issue, which we would have to deal with in different ways. it's about health people and either way it's an issue that cannot be ignored.

Toyota Announces Fix for Accelerator Pedal Entrapment Problem

Friday, November 27, 2009

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today announced that Toyota has identified a vehicle-based remedy to fix a sudden acceleration safety issue involving floor mats trapping accelerator pedals in various Toyota and Lexus models. Toyota announced the recall of these vehicles in early October and said it would soon develop a vehicle-based remedy to reduce the risk of a crash due to accelerator pedal entrapment.

The models involved in the recall are: 2007 to 2010 MY Camry, 2005 to 2010 MY Avalon, 2004 to 2009 MY Prius, 2005-2010 MY Tacoma, 2007-2010 MY Tundra, 2007-2010 MY ES 350, 2006-2010 MY IS 250, and 2006 to 2010 MY IS 350.

NHTSA said Toyota plans to reconfigure the accelerator pedal, and in some cases the shape of the floor surface under the pedal, to address the risk of pedal entrapment due to floor mat interference, particularly with regard to inappropriate or improperly attached floor mats. At the same time, Toyota will develop replacement pedals for these vehicles, which will become available for some models in April 2010. Toyota will provide owners with the new pedal, when it becomes available, even if the vehicle has already received the modified pedal under the recall.

In addition, vehicles with any genuine Toyota or Lexus accessory all-weather floor mats will be provided with newly-designed replacement driver- and front-passenger side all-weather mats.

NHTSA also said that Toyota will, in addition to these announced vehicle-based remedies, install a brake override system on the involved Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES 350, IS 350 and IS 250 models as an “extra measure of confidence.” The brake override system would ensure the vehicle would stop if both the brake and the accelerator pedals are simultaneously applied. NHTSA is particularly pleased that Toyota is taking this additional step.

NHTSA said that Toyota intends to notify vehicle owners on a rolling basis, starting with owners of the ES 350, Camry, and Avalon vehicles. While awaiting Toyota's notification, NHTSA urges owners to remove all removable driver's side floor mats and not replace them until their vehicles have received the remedies being provided by Toyota. Toyota will begin making the necessary fixes to the recalled vehicles beginning early in 2010, perhaps in January. Initially, Toyota dealers will be instructed on how to reshape existing accelerator pedals. Later, replacement accelerator pedals will be available for installation on vehicles not yet remedied or, if the owner so chooses, even to replace the modified pedals.

Into The Wild

Thursday, November 26, 2009
If you think carefully about what binds you to the society we live in today, it's money. Money makes the world go round and some of us thrive on that. But we've lost our connection to the earth. No I am not a raging hippie so please don't dismiss what I'm writing as crazy babble, I'm a consumer who loves to shop and distract myself from the stresses of life by slipping on a shiny new pair of shoes, but as I'm sure we all know that high doesn't last long, that's why we continue spending.

So one day, a movie was recommended to me, Into the Wild. It was a story that touched me deeply, a young man trying to break free from the confines of a repressing society and make a soulful journey to Alaska in search of himself and peace. Now, I also believe that he was running away from a past that haunted him and that he should have been a little more prepared in the wild and because he wasn't it ultimately cost him his life. But I can't help but feel a deep sense of admiration for him, he had the courage to do what most of us would consider our very worst fear. To be honest, I think we are conditioned to live in fear, with fear comes control but I suppose I'm sounding crazy enough as it is with what I'm saying.

Mark Boyle is another example of letting it go and riding the wave called nature. Relying completely on the earth to sustain you. He was a successful businessman, who found the stresses of modern day living soul destroying so he gave it all up and now relies mostly on what the earth can provide for him. He claims it has brought him a peace that is unrivaled and that he wouldn't trade this life he's chosen for anything. That's quite a statement. I don't think that this life can be anything glamorous, the things we take for granted would be considered luxuries. Hot water, fridge, running water, are a few of the things that spring to my mind. But for a higher sense of purpose, direction and peace would you be willing to give all that up? I can't say that I'm totally repulsed by the idea.

Jet-powered Ford guns for 300 mph

Jet-powered Ford guns
oe Wilkins knew there was only one way to give his supercharged, alcohol-injected Hemi-engined hot rod more power: Put a jet engine in the trunk.

"It started as a hobby and turned into a monster," said Joe Wilkins, the motor madman behind what might be the wildest 1939 Ford ever built. He's an inventor and defense department contractor, and the idea of goosing the Ford's ability to turn heads and shred tires came when he bought a used gas turbine engine.

"I got hooked on the simplicity and power that this thing produced, and I decided one day I want to put it in a car."

T For Trust

Wednesday, November 25, 2009
Trust, it's an issue that is claimed to be the foundation of all our relationships. I strongly believe that statement, I don't believe that it's the entire foundation, other aspects such as love and respect make up a good portion but without trust those aspects would literally mean nothing.

It's all interconnected, as most things in life are, but after an incident that occurred today, I wondered how many people there are in my life that I can actually trust. I won't answer that because I think the answer would shock even me. If you've ever watched an Oprah show, you'll be familiar with Skype. I was speaking to a close friend of mine and admittedly giving him a mouthful, he had done something to upset me, now this is a person I trust considerably, we've chatted for hours and shared a lot with each other, when out of the blue, his friend, who by default is now my friend, tells me that he was shown the conversation by my close friend. This immediately upsets the balance of a friendship I considered to be trustworthy.

Needless to say this left me dazed and confused and scrambling to understand how the dynamics had changed so abruptly, I felt violated. Unable to talk to him anymore, I made up an excuse and did the dodging dance that I have come to do some well lately. You see, I was entrusted not to tell my close friend about his friends betrayal. It was a melting pot of betrayal and I was the only one that seemed to be keeping her word. A true position of weakness because I love giving my opinion, to a fault actually.

I seem to be put into that situation a lot, people feel they can trust me, share their secrets and it's usually friend against friend, piggy in the middle and I'm quite certain I've been unknowingly on the other side of that too. So when it comes to trust, I can feel myself becoming slightly more bitter, starting to watch what I say, keeping doors I once left wide open, shut and locked. I consider myself to open and honest and I've had to start altering who I am to protect myself from the hurt of people not being trustworthy. I was unfortunately unable to dodge this bullet.

I'm not for one second claiming perfection, in fact, I'm as human as the rest of the world but I try not to intentionally hurt other people and that's more than I can say about the people in my life nevermind the rest of the population. It saddens me that something as simple as a promise can be broken so easily, that years of trust can be destroyed in a second when one lie makes itself known, and the more lies that are told the deeper the rabbit hole becomes. Trust is as fragile as glass, it's just in its nature, let's be a little more careful in it's handling.

No demolitions in Murcia under "Coastal Law" in coming months

However, a clarification of a parliamentary answer in the Spanish Parliament has confirmed that no such demolitions will be carried out in "the

Something to Tell the Grandkids? I Doubt It......

There are moments in all our lives that will be remembered forever. One big moment for me is when my daughter was born. It was the most intense moment of my life, staring into innocent, dark blues expecting me to teach her the ways of the world. From that moment on, I had a purpose that would take every single fibre of being to complete. An ongoing journey of discovery, joy, pain and an unexplained range of emotions. A person never stops being a parent, as well as teaching our kids, we learn in the process.

I have a friend, who has literally traveled the world, a real jetsetter. The other day she was staring at her computer screen with a crooked smile on her face, I knew the look immediately. It was the look of remembering a moment in time that brought a period of happiness that stays with us long after it's gone. It was picture of magnificent beach in Hawaii, she told me that she remembered that exact moment so clearly it almost made her shed a tear, she loved Hawaii and I can almost be certain it loved her back.

The unfortunate side of memories are the bad ones. As clearly as we remember the momentous ones, the bad ones are just as clear, unless we choose to box that memory and lock it away in the closet of the recesses of our mind. Losing a loved one, a failed trip to England, a childhood trauma, they all stay with us long after the moment passes. But like everything in life, there's an amusing side, there are good and bad memories and then just down right funny ones. There are memories that still make us laugh until our sides hurt. Memories we thrive on to give us the best medicine available on this planet, laughter.

One of the funniest memories I have was when I was quite young, I had just learn't to ride a bike and of course, I was invincible, never mind the fact that I had fallen so many times I was surprised I hadn't sustained a serious injury. While riding my bike with a friend I started showing off in front of the neighbour kids, I was riding as fast as I could, up and down, up and down. There was quite a big bush at the end of where I was riding and I would stop abruptly and spin the bike around, I was quite a tomboy was I was younger. Everyone other girl I knew was playing barbies and I was getting muddy and dirty outside. Anyway, I came a little too fast and landed up riding my bike right into the bush, I got stuck right in the middle of it and cut to ribbons by small thorns. My friend had to get my dad to cut me out of it. Needless to say, I wasn't feeling very popular after that.

I still laugh myself silly when I think of that moment, my friend and I still laugh about it to this day. If only someone had been filming it. Granted this is quite a juvenile memory, but the reason I'm babbling on about memories is because I came across a story that I personally think is equally, if not more, funny than my moment but it has to have an age restriction attached because this memory is not for kids.

Picture Sydney, Australia, the clock tower that has become a favorite for tourists and locals alike standing proud in the midday sun. Now add lovers having a grand time at the top of the tower. Yes, getting down and dirty, making love, christening the tower, whichever suits your vocabulary. I can almost feel the disapproving faces but I cant help but think this is hilarious. The couple, who are unknown, obviously knew they could be seen, so whether it was a prank or a spur of the moment outrageous idea is still to be decided. But I can guarantee one thing, they will be laughing at that moment for a very long time, I know I will. It might not be a belly laugh but it'll be the naughty snigger that makes life a little more interesting.

Tire Pressure and Loading

Tire Pressure and Loading
Tire information placards and vehicle certification labels contain information on tires and load limits. These labels indicate the vehicle manufacturer's information including:
  • Recommended tire size
  • Recommended tire inflation pressure (usually given in PSI cold)
  • Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR):
    • the maximum occupant and cargo weight a vehicle is designed to carry
  • Gross axle weight ratings (GAWR) for front and rear axles:
    • the maximum weight the axle systems are designed to carry

Both placards and certification labels are permanently attached to the vehicle door edge, door post, glove-box door, or inside of the trunk lid. You can also find the recommended tire pressure and load limit for your vehicle in the vehicle owner's manual.

* Understanding Tire Pressure
* Checking Tire Pressure
* Maintaining Tire Pressure

Understanding Tire Pressure and Load Limits

Tire inflation pressure is the level of air in the tire that provides it with load-carrying capacity and affects the overall performance of the vehicle. The tire inflation pressure is a number that indicates the amount of air pressure– measured in pounds per square inch (psi)–a tire requires to be properly inflated. (You will also find this number on the vehicle information placard expressed in kilopascals (kPa), which is the metric measure used internationally.)

Manufacturers of passenger vehicles and light trucks determine this number based on he vehicle's design load limit, that is, the greatest amount of weight a vehicle can safely carry and the vehicle's tire size. The proper tire pressure for your vehicle is referred to as the "recommended cold inflation pressure."

Checking Tire Pressure

It is important to check your vehicle's tire pressure at least once a month for the following reasons:

* Most tires may naturally lose air over time.
* Tires can lose air suddenly if you drive over a pothole or other object or if you strike the curb when parking.

Purchase a tire pressure gauge to keep in your vehicle. Gauges can be purchased at tire dealerships, auto supply stores, and other retail outlets.

The vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire inflation pressure is the proper psi when a tire is cold. The term cold does not relate to the outside temperature. Rather, a cold tire is one that has not been driven on for at least three hours. When you drive, your tires get warmer, causing the air pressure within them to increase. Your tires can get warm after just 1 mile of driving.

Therefore, to get an accurate tire pressure reading, you must measure tire pressure when the tires are cold or compensate for the extra pressure in warm tires.

Steps for Maintaining Proper Tire Pressure

Step 1: Locate the recommended tire pressure on the vehicle's tire information placard, certification label, or in the owner's manual.

Step 2: Check the tire pressure of all tires.

Step 3: If the tire pressure is too high in any of the tires, slowly release air by gently pressing on the tire valve stem with the edge of your tire gauge until you get to the correct pressure.

Step 4: If the tire pressure is too low, note the difference between the measured tire pressure and the correct tire pressure. These "missing" pounds of pressure are what you will need to add. At a service station, add the missing pounds of air pressure to each tire that is under inflated.

Step 5: Check all the tires to make sure they have the same air pressure (except in cases in which the front and rear tires are supposed to have different amounts of pressure).

If you have been driving your vehicle and think that a tire is under inflated, fill it to the recommended cold inflation pressure indicated on your vehicle's tire information placard or certification label. While your tire may still be slightly under inflated due to the extra pressure of a warm tire, it is safer to drive with air pressure that is slightly lower than the vehicle manufacturer's recommended cold inflation pressure than to drive with a significantly under inflated tire. Since this is a temporary fix, don't forget to recheck and adjust the tire's pressure when you can obtain a cold reading.

Deals galore as recession bites Singapore

singaporerom pizza delivery chains to fancy restaurants, “recession” is now a buzz word on menus of many restaurants and bars in Singapore, a nation in the middle of its worst-ever economic downturn.Walking through crowded bars and restaurants in the riverside entertainment hub Clarke Quay or the main shopping strip Orchard Road, Singapore’s economy does not seem to be suffering. But bar and restaurant owners say they are having to offer deals to pull in customers, after a slump in business last month.

“When you get depressed, you need more beer,” said Ian Fitzgerald, an English software developer for Standard Chartered.”I notice than more people are drinking at the beginning of the week than at the end of the week,” he said, standing outside a bar in the city’s financial district.

The Hard Rock Cafe, just off Singapore’s main shopping boulevard Orchard Road, is offering a S$10 (A$9.70) “Recession Set Lunch,” a promotion that came after the restaurant saw a 20 per cent drop in its business in February. It said sales had improved this month and it looked to build on this with new monthly promotions.

“We won’t call it Happy Hour because that’s what everybody is calling it. You need to be a bit more creative,” said the chain’s promotion manager Natalie Wee.Restaurant and bar House, in the jungly ex-colonial army area of Dempsey Road that is popular with young professionals, has slashed its wine prices by 35 per cent and offers a “recession plan” package with 10 per cent off bills more than S$50.

The discounts have brought crowds back to a level similar to pre-recession days, said spokeswoman Janet Lim, after a 30 per cent plunge in customers late last year. Singapore was the first country in Asia to fall into recession last year.

DOWNTURN DEALS

Singapore, which has said its economy could shrink as much as 10 per cent this year, announced on Friday that retail sales in January slid 12 per cent from a year ago, but sales at restaurants jumped 20 per cent. This spending could be boosted by Lunar New Year celebrations that occurred in January, so restaurants and economists are not optimistic.

“In view of the busy state of Singapore’s malls it may not seem as though spending is collapsing but, judging by January’s retail sales numbers, people were apparently just making use of the free air conditioning,” said economist Robert Prior-Wandesforde at HSBC in Singapore.Outlets catering to tourists have been worse hit.

Hard Rock Cafe sales at Changi Airport’s Terminal 3 have fallen 20 per cent with no sign of improvement, said manager Mark Chan.Harry’s Bar, Singapore’s biggest bar chain that caters mostly to expatriate and local professionals, told Reuters it has closed down four non-performing outlets, including at the airport, and did not think its sales would rise this year.

Singapore expects a 10 per cent fall in visitor arrivals in 2009. Singapore Tourism Board has launched a “2009 Reasons to visit Singapore” campaign, giving away free air tickets and discount packages on five-star hotels.Despite a slowdown, tourism and restaurant operators said they were doing better than in 2003 during the SARS respiratory illness epidemic.

“Our business was down 60-70 per cent during SARS,” said Harry’s CEO Mohan Mulani. “Issues like that are more sensitive than economic numbers.”

ChileChile is one of the few emerging market countries that is holding up well this year. The Bank of New York Mellon Chile ADR Index is up 9.05% year-to-date. Though the economy of Chile is heavily dependent on exports of commodities such as Copper, in recent years the economy has become more diversified. The domestic economy is strong due to various policies implemented by the government.

While there are a few Chilean stocks trading as ADRs in the US, the easiest way to invest in Chile is via the iShares MSCI Chile Investable Market Index ETF (ECH) and the closed-ended fund The Chile Fund (CH). These two funds give broad exposure to many Chilean stocks.

1. iShares MSCI Chile Investable Market Index ETF (ECH):

Launched in 2007, this ETF has about $150M in assets. The current yield is 1.96% and the expense ratio is 0.63%. Year-to-date the fund is up 12.34%. Since inception the fund is down 24.80%.

One of the pros of this fund is that it has only 9% of the assets invested in financials. Energy, Utilities and Industrials account for a major portion of the portfolio.

2. The Chile Fund (CH)

Currently CH is trading at a discount of 14%. The fund has an asset of base of $106M and the yield is 1.53%.

The fund made a return of 49.58% in 2007 when Chilean stocks were hot due to the commodities boom. In 2008, it gave back all the returns from 2007 and ended the year with a loss of almost 52%. Year-to-date the fund is up about 12%. Similar to the ETF, the assets of the fund are widely allocated among various stocks in different sectors.

Both the closed-end fund and the ETF are smart options get exposure to Chilean stocks. However CH will be much more volatile than the ETF in these turbulent times since it is a closed-ended fund.

Back in January Marketwatch has an article titled Looking for defensive exposure? Try Chilean stocks. In this piece, Geoffrey Dennis, Latin America strategist at Citigroup, said “Chile always outperforms in down markets. Get Lost In Lust of Europe

Being 3 weeks, as a backpacker traveling around Europe, unforgettable memory. Nobody beside, met somebody new, unexpected problems, surprises, shocks, happiness, and sadness are some excellent experience that you will find. Oh G, I do not know how to start this story. I will try to make it more informative so you can get the idea (perhaps as a reference for you while traveling) not just as a diary.

Tips, you should do these while being a traveller in Europe, go to information center (usually in central station or airport), ask must-visited places, take train plan, and contact your new friends there.

Guys, I started my long journey from Munich, then to Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Netherlands (Delft, Rotterdam, Den Haag, and Amsterdam), finally to Stuttgart. With only 600 Euros, traveled around these cities was a really good deal. Oops, I forgot to tell you that money did not include the hotel reservations. I did not reserve the hotels, I used my networking and asked my friends. Like community webs (friendster, facebook, etc), I made some new friends from my old friends. Very interesting. And you know what? Indonesians here are very nice. They will welcome you nicely, eventhough you never met them before. Trust me!

Before we start, I should provide you some interesting pictures from my beloved camera. Unfortunately, I lost it. So, I would like to take some pictures from some websites. Regards for the sources.

1st point, MUNICH.
A daily ticket = 5 Euros
As an industrial city, Munich looked so busy and fast. Everyone seemed will lose his last train. But I liked this atmosphere. It pumped my spirit for being more efficient in time and work. First place that I visited was BMW Welt (BMW's World). This sophisticated architectural building combined the showroom, park, technology exhibition room, store, and also restaurant. I spent about 4 hours for exploring this place and I was so excited since it was a bit hard finding this kind of museum in France. Here, you can find the new series of BMW from class 3, 5, until your private-coated BMW. Also you can find some information how the sophisticated BMW combined the luxury, sport, and technology. But, I missed something here, the history how the BMW went into this recent way. But, don't worry, it was free of charge.
Vienna's Rathaus
BMW Welt

As the most expensive city in Germany, Munich also offered you a nice down town - full of the modern stores-, old buildings, nice germans speaking english well, bretzel (the bread). This original bread came from Stuttgart (Parik told me) and the taste is salty, for me too salty. It will be better with butter. Good for breakfast and for your coffee will be perfect.

Fortunately, at that time, they still had annual market for christmas here. Everyone was out of their homes and got along with friends in this market. They provided christmas merchandises, foods, hot drinks, and sometimes music concerts. They seemed very lovely. If we want to compare with Indonesian culture, we can call it Pasar Malam.

Thank you so much Allen. Seperti kata Parik, ati-ati yah dirumah itu. Hihihi.

Next destination, Vienna. I took fast train from Munich, and it costed 78 Euros, spending 5 hours 21 minutes. If you're lucky, you can find special prize (promo) with only 29 Euros. Find out in www.db.de.

2nd point, Vienna Austria

A weekly ticket= 14 Euros.

Not like Munich, Vienna is a small city. With only 1 millions people, this city looked more enjoyable. I do not say there's no rush, but it was just more relax. Everyone can speak english. The prizes of stuffs looked same as in France. After arriving, we went to the famous pizzaria here, Pizza Bizi in center of town. It provided about 4 kinds of pizzas. I took fish pizza for only 2,70 Euros each. It was big enough for dinner. At that time, they still had Christmas Market and I thought it was similar like what I had in Munich. This market was placed in front of the City Hall (Rathaus). This old and famous building had 25 covered paintings. These paintings were opened each day until 25th December, the christmas day. I liked this building. Looked beautiful, combining the east culture and west culture.

Vienna's Rathaus

The most interesting place here was the Hill. Oh God, I forgot the name. Ok, let's call My Hill. You can go there by train and take a bus after. I think it was only 30 minutes from town. Here, in My Hill, you can see the Vienna. It was so wonderful. Some of visitors came here just for walking, sightseeing, but also for sport running. With snow, I realized how wonderful it is. But, for sure, in the summer or autumn, it will be more wonderful. Colored by the blue sky, green leaves, and sun, you can not imagine that. Bring your lunch, coffee, coke and getting along friends will be a perfect moment while you're in My Hill.

Hey, Rangga (Material 98, gak tahu kan kalo nih lagi ngambil PhD di Wina?), thanks man for the place. Ga nyangka bisa ketemu LFM lagi LFM lagi.

After Vienna, next destination is Prague, the City of God. From Vienna, I took train, with 56 Euros spending around 4 hours. I bought it in the Central Station directly.

The Sting of Success

Models, the epitome of style and luxury and envied by so many women across the globe. I've watched many fashion shows, beautiful women that grace the floor and sway so elegantly in front of millions, their features fine and defined, their skin silky and their hair always a taste of perfection. But what lies beneath the model? A fragile human being clinging desperately for some sense of normalcy? The have lives we could only begin to imagine and yet the media is rife with stories of suicides and drug abuse.

As with all types of success, the amount of pressure is most likely soul destroying. Late nights, long working hours, constant smiles and that's not even mentioning the stuff I really believe that happens behind closed, high powered doors. A came across a story about Daul Kim, an oriental masterpiece that felt the only option that was left for her was death. The worst part is that she had a blog and made some desperate cries for help that were left unanswered but as I'm sure we are all aware, the models of this world seem to many of us as untouchables.

What if someone had reached out to this woman, because in all truth, she was just a woman in trouble, even more heartbreaking, a young woman in trouble. 20 is far to young for a life to end, life is a journey and hers was cut off right at the beginning. Although I'm sure for her, she had probably felt like she had lived lifetimes with the high paced lifestyle she was living.

We all strive for success, we all wish for things to be better but maybe for just one moment we should take a look at the life we have right now, the people that surround us, the love we take for granted because as far as I can tell, the road to success is a lonely and dark one, so maybe appreciate the journey as much as you will the outcome.
