Thai Elephants Conservation Centre and Thung Kwian Forest Plantation

Enjoy Lam pang Forest Plantation on the elephent's back.
The Thai Elephants Conservation Centre
covers an area of about 280 acres in Amphoe
Hang Chat in Lampang Province. Originated
in 1992, the centre aims to conserve Thai
elephants and serve as a one-stop database
of elephants. The centre trains elephants to
do all kinds of jobs. It also houses an exhibition
building with displays on elephants,
for example, an elephant barn for the royal
household, a mahout village, an elephant
memorial and a hospital. For agro-tourists keen
on elephant performances, the centre offers
fun activities such as elephants playing soccer,
log pulling, striding in line, saluting and
painting with brushes. For more excitement,
a forest tour on an ùelephant taxiû is
available. To be closer to nature and local
lifestyle, the centre can arrange a home stay
in the area. A wedding on elephantûs back,
a combination of modern and traditionalNorthern culture, can also be arranged. The
worldûs first-ever training school for elephants
and mahouts is also located here. All
trainees will be coached to control, conduct
and take care of the elephants. There are
usually numerous Thai and international
applicants. For details, call 0 5422 8034 or

Thung Kwian Forest Plantation
Next to the elephant centre is the 6,240-acre
teak plantation. The area is shaded and peaceful,
a perfect recluse for biking and nature study
trekking. The plantation houses various kinds of
fragrant flowers, and rare traditional Thai flowers
such as Magnoliaceae, white butterfly bushes,
Chinese rice flowers, and Annonaceae, as well
as a medicinal garden and a pine forest. The
cold season is the time of wild sunflowers
blooming alternately with the pink wild cherry
blossoms. The nearby Thung Kwian Market
adds local flavors to the already-colourful
atmosphere with its local products and dishes.
